Ever since the days of Caribou Ranch, Boulder has been home to some great acts and top notch musicians. Enough so that the city has given birth to a definable "sound," as in the "Boulder sound." What exactly is the "Boulder Sound?" It's something free, open and broad. It encompasses styles from as many genres as it does cultures. It often gives way to long improvisational jams with funky bass lines and weird riffs. Boulder area bands always have unusual instrumentation. Violins, accordians and lutes are as likely seen on the stage as drums, basses and guitars. The stage. The driving force behind the city's local music draw. Boulder nightclubs are always packed, whether the crowd is infested with frat boys and pre-law students or pot-smoking hippie drop-outs.
