JETHRO TULL. Editorial Review
The Skinny
Doubtful that British agriculturalist and author Jethro Tull (1674-1741) who invented a drill-like device to plant seeds in the ground, ever envisioned that his name would become a part of rock history, but that's what you get for having a cool moniker. Maybe there's a little-known 1800s Austrian semiotician called Groke Krone who will one day be the biggest syllables in heavy metal. In any case, legend has it that in the late 1960s a young Ian Anderson, of Blackpool, England, needed a new band name in a hurry and pulled Tull's from the spine of an old book. And thus the seed was planted for "Aqualung," "Thick as a Brick" and other hit singles, in which the group mixed hard-thumping rock with traditional Celtic melodies and pipes, tights and codpieces with power chords. In three decades of recording and touring Jethro Tull's lineup alternated through a number of musicians, but the witty and inventive Anderson has always been at the fore, with flutist and guitarist Martin Barre also a mainstay.
