In Short – Drive 90 minutes from Denver to get to 14,264 feet, parked next to the world's highest astronomical observatory. In an airplane at this altitude, the FAA would require airplane passengers to breathe from a tank. Drive to Idaho Springs and follow the signs to the Mount Evans Highway (Colorado Highway 103). Begin the climb along lovely, green Chicago Creek. Above Echo Lake, turn onto Colorado 5. Go early in the day; storms are likely starting mid-afternoon.
