The rental car location was inconvenient. Traveling from the rental car to the airport took over half an hour. I traveled with a group that rented several vehicles and the street signs were not clear because some in our party circled the airport twice before finding it. Also, the signs directing you from the rental cars to the airport were not clear. If you rent a car, you are better off with minimal luggage because you cannot use a luggage cart on the airtrain. Most in our party missed our flight. We travel monthly and have never missed a flight because of rental car use. As for food, Sankaku had the best noodles I've ever had in an airport.

The BART train system is now running directly to SFO, and makes the airport much more conveinent. Its an easy to use public transportation system, and a ride to downtown costs $4.90, rather than the $40 you can spend on cab fares. I got ripped off on my last cab ride from the airport to my hotel, and will never take a cab from SFO again - BART is comparable in time, cheaper, and less of a hassle than taking a taxi. I recently spent 4 hours at SFO, and found plenty to do to pass the time. The international terminal has a food court and various entertainment. The regular domestic terminals have WiFi, so it makes up for the lack of shops and food past security.
