Editorial Review for Virago – by Jonathan Flax
In Short
The ultra-trendy Virago is part sushi bar, part late-night drink destination and part upscale restaurant. The middle room, with its cozy S-shaped bar, is a see-and-be-seen locale; the dark-blue walls and nouveau lighting in the rear dining room lend plenty of atmosphere. Seafood reigns supreme among the entrees, featuring the always-in-demand honey-banana grouper, the sesame-seared mahi mahi with sweet potatoes and tropical fruit salsa, and the seared scallops served over crab.

Four of us went to Virago on a recent hot summer night. The guys wore linen shorts & dress shirts; ladies wore dresses. We were told at the door "shorts weren't allowed". Hum, let me get this straight. No dress shorts, but torn & faded blue jeans w/"slept-in AC/DC" t-shirts were fine. We've been in exclusive country clubs that require collared shirts & shorts are acceptable (as long as they aren't cargo shorts). So I'm not sure what Virago's trying to be when it grows up (exclusive club? Then advertise it as so). I learned a lot that night. A) There's a moronic dress code at Virago B) That Virago needs to realize that this is Nashville, not Boston (what happened to our hip West Coast attitude?) C)That Virago is touted as Asian but is run by Nazis. C) That we went elsewhere & had a much better meal D) I've had great sushi & to get it, I don't have to go to Virago. Hell, I'll just go to Tokyo.
Pros: Can't say. Wasn't allowed in. Not "properly" dressed.
Cons: Used to be a great restaurant. Not sure now.

OK, Nashville is a great little city with nice people. People just plain care about other people. This place was the opposite. Even the people taking reservations are horrendously rude. Go to any other restaurant in town. Management - shame on you!
Pros: OK sushi
Cons: lousy service!!
