The Appeal
Flora and fauna are this hike's main draw. The first leg of the trail is shaded by lodgepole pines and Douglas firs--be sure to watch for columbines, shooting-stars and irises in moist, partially sunny patches. The trees then yield to meadows thick with purple monks-hood, bluebells and Indian paint-brush. Be careful as you cross the streams cascading down the hillside.
The Experience
The steady but gentle westward climb across the slope takes you to the treeline, populated by gnarled cedars and creeping juniper. Also check out the remnants of an inactive mine. If you are planning to stay, campsites are found below. Here the terrain consists of small rocky hills, patches of stunted timber, and numerous valleys, where marsh marigolds, elephant's-ear and glacier lilies surround still pools of water.

This is a beautiful hike! ... a bit of a drive thru a semi-rough road, but well worth it. Go to Eldora (not Eudora); its named afte the ski resort nearby. Just drive west to Hessie trailhead, then bear left. After 4 miles of interesting roads, the trailhead is at the end. BEAUTIFUL scenery of a couple waterfalls accross the valley, and even a glimpse of a few ski runs in the beginning. Not a long hike, but a bit strenuous at times due to altitude. You end up above treeline. Bring your dogs, but keep em leashed; lotsa wildlife!

If the phrase "5 miles up a dirt road" scares you, this is not the trail for you. Be aware that this place is not easy to find (go through Nederland to Eudora... at the end of Eudora is a dirt road leading to the trailhead) and that you will definitely need 4 wheel drive and plenty of time. The locals in Nederland didn't know a better way to get there, either, and had never heard of Buckingham Campground.
