Editorial Review for Restaurant Kevin Taylor – by Ephraim Mallery
In Short
Everyone from out-of-town celebrities to theatergoers gather at this plush restaurant. The gold-and-green decor creates an impression of a castle dining hall, which feels stuffy but turns lively when it's full. Famed local chef Kevin Taylor's menu features items such as seared scallops atop curried cauliflower, meaty white fish infused with fresh fennel and prime sirloin with Gorgonzola potato gratin. The signature dessert is a miniature cake that oozes rich, dark chocolate from the center.

We've heard some great things about the food and the service at the Restaurant Kevin Taylor (Teatro Hotel). My husband and I decided to have Saturday night date there. I was first disappointed by the lack of ambience and atmosphere at the restaurant. The room is awkward, simple furniture, lack of decorations and style. There were some empty tables with no settings, just plain white table cloths. The waiters were courteous but not friendly. They seemed depressed and not happy at all. When the food arrived I was surprised by the tiny portions. We ordered the hot chocolate cake for dessert, it was really good, but then again, I love chocolate. Overall, we spend too much money to walk out feeling hungry, unsatisfied and disappointed. If you are looking for a fancy ambience and some old fashioned style try something else – like the Palace Arms at the Brown Palace. Their Kobe steak is impeccable and the chocolate torte is to die for.
Pros: Well known name, DT location, close to the art complex
Cons: Lack of style or ambience, tiny food portions, unfriendly service, average food, no value

My husband and I excitedly made reservations at Kevin Taylor for our first anniversary. We were seated promptly and introduced to out waitress who reviewed the menus with us after a short wait. The host was wonderful and attentive, helped us choose an excellent bottle of wine to pair with our meal. The glass of wine I ordered wih my appetizer was poured promptly while my husband's beer took another 15 minutes. Appetizers were delicious. The waitress forgot what I had ordered and came back to ask, and even after that I was almost served the incorrect soup. Our meals were great, we really enjoyed the food presentation and flavors, but the service at this pricey restaurant could stand to improve.
Pros: Great food
Cons: Poor service
