I have been a big fan of this place for several years , but yesterday 9/14/12 I waited for 20 minutes for them to open ... and Nada !!! They say they open at 6:30 am ... Not true ! When you waste a customers time , or mislead them , they seek out other options Gateaux !!!
Wedding Extravaganza. For my daughter's wedding, we had cakes on every table instead of flower centerpieces. We wanted modern, beautiful cakes in different flavors that we could cut for everyone to sample later at a cake bar. Kathleen did an awesome job, beyond anyone's expectations. The table numbers were in white chocolate and people were three deep to try flavors like red velvet and white chocolate and grand marnier. The cakes were clearly the hit of the wedding and we'll always be known as the wedding with the cakes! The cakes were not only great looking, they were great tasting. Kudos to everyone at Gateaux!
Yuk!!!!!!! Why is this bakery rated so high?.
Visiting Denver from Washington state. I ordered a birthday cake; chocolate with white buttercream frosting.
The cake itself was gorgeous, but that is all I have good to say about it. Very dry cake (did you guys make it weeks before and freeze it)? The frosting was absolutely tasteless. These folks could take lessons from Cakes by Karen in Lake Havasu AZ. Perhaps they are more concerned with looks rather than taste. A shame and no one wanted seconds.
Gateaux is GREAT!!!.
I brought in a vintage circus table cloth with an idea of how I wanted them to create a cake for my son's first birthday. I wasn't totally clear on what I wanted, but one of the owners sat down with me, made some great suggestions, and asked me to bring in good photos of the specifics that we agreed upon.
I did just as she said, and met with the other owner where we finalized details, price (which was very fair I think) and off I went.
I came in to pick up my cake and almost fell to the floor in shock of how BEAUTIFUL and PERFECT this cake was. It totally exceeded my expectations. The circus elephants they made for the top of the cake stood up and were made of modeling chocolate and were EXACT replicas of the photos I brought in.
The cake was a work of art, and everyone was so wowed by how beautiful it was (we had it on display for the entire party). children were gathered around the table drooling!
The owners recommended the perfect sized cake for the number of people we were feeding, explained how to cut it to get as many pieces as we needed, and helped me load it up in my car.
Everyone loved how yummy the cake was - especially me, and I'm a pre cupcake phenomenon cake snob! YUMMY, Excellent communication, great customer service too. Thank you Gateaux for making my little guy's birthday a huge success. I will be back in the future for sure!
Flavorless and dry cakes. Looking for a wedding cake, we heard great things about Gateaux. We went for a tasting, and were terribly disappointed! We tasted two of our favorites, Red Velvet, and Tiramisu. Both cakes were extremely dry. There's just no excuse for that. The tiramisu was practically flavorless. The red velvet cake was really dense and dry. The first red flag was when they pulled the red velvet out of the freezer!! The butter cream frosting was even worse. It wasn't sweet enough, and it tasted just like whipped butter. And then they told us they would charge several hundred dollars for a delivery fee. While their sweets look absolutely delicious, we have never been so disappointed. I've had grocery store cakes that tasted better than this.
so-so. I am a fanatic lover of high quality sweets - not overly sugary concoctions, but flavorful desserts that rely on freshness and creativity instead of sugar. Unfortunately, the birthday cake I bought from Gateaux was good, but not excellent. The cake layers were quite dry. It was also very skimpy on the fresh peaches, which was the part I was looking forward to the most. Each big slice had maybe 3-4 tiny bits of peach. On the plus side, it was pretty. Also, the employees were friendly.
Bad Bad Bad. I called Gateaux on a recommendation from a friend of mine in January to see if I could set up a tasting for my wedding cake. She asked when the wedding was and I told her it was set for November. I was immediately informed they would not be able to help me. I was pretty surprised that they would just turn business away like that. My husband and I decided to go to Child's Bakery, which was absolutely fabulous and extremely friendly. Our cake was exactly what we wanted and it was delicious! I later had a chance to try some Gateaux cake and was soooo happy that they (so rudely) turned me away. The cake was super dry and, just as someone else pointed out, the "cream cheese" frosting was horrible! Not sweet, greasy and tasted like Crisco. Don't waste your money, go to Child's!!!!
Great desserts, so-so cakes. If you've never tried Gateaux's mini-pastries, you're missing out. They are fabulous. However, their cakes are NOT good. I have tried two (thinking the first one was a fluke) and they were both the same: bad. They are dry and the icing is not sweet at all - actually, I kind of agree with the other reviewer who said it tastes like Crisco! I think it is a French way of baking, maybe, but if you like traditional buttercream icing, these cakes are not for you. All of their other pastries, though, are really fabulous (their croissant cinnamon roll - OMG!)
If you want delicious and memorable this is absolutely the BEST!. Gateaux Bakery has become one of the cornerstone vendors I call for every event I plan on a corporate basis or for my personal parties. After every party I am always asked by several people where I got those fabulous...... and I am proud and confident to refer to Gateaux. I have hosted several Valentine Mother/Daughter tea parties and the cakes cookies petit fors and Strawberries make my party. The little girls love the hand dipped short bread cookies (made in the shape of teacups, dresses, hats and hearts) and the big girls can't wait for the Chocolate Lovers' Ganache. My personal favorite is the Coconut Torte! I am currently planning an 80th birthday party for my dad and he asked if I was going to get his cake from "that wonderful bakery"- I assured him this special cake had already been ordered from Gateaux! On the customer service side the owners of Gateaux have gone above and beyond for me many times- once I forgot my entire order (and the only food for the party!) and they called me all afternoon Saturday and stayed until I could get there, hours after closing - just to make sure my party was successful. If you need "over-the-top" or something simple there is nothing better than Gateaux!!!!
Bad Customer Service. I wanted to have a nice cake made for my husband's birthday. I found Gateaux's website and thought it would be a good place to try. I went into Gateaux and told the woman working I wanted to order a birthday cake. I also told her my husband has a nut allergy. She said they won't make cakes for people with allergies. Then she made the comment, "how can you even go out to eat?" and "it must even be hard to cook at home". I could tell by her expression that she thought that was funny, but I was annoyed. I told her it was never a problem as long as we inform the restaurants where we are dining. Well, I wish I would have thought to say: people with nut allergies don't live in bubbles! I thought her comments was annoying and rude. Very poor customer service.
