I do NOT recommend this place! I have
never been treated so poorly at a restaurant in my life. The staff was extremely rude and could care less about us.
We arrived at the restaurant and had a reservation. We waited 15 minutes before someone greeted us. There was one elder couple in front of us and later a single came in. The hostess decided to seat both the elder couple and single before us even though we were there first and had a reservation! The rude hostess/manager sat the single in a huge booth and the couple at a table. She then moved the couple to the last booth without even looking at us yet. The manager, Jeanne, finally got to us and we told her we had a reservation. She said she could seat us at the last table, which was by a huge loud party. We politely told her that I was pregnant and I couldn't sit in a hard chair and we wanted something quieter; after all we did have a reservation and you would think we would have a nice comfy table waiting for us. She said she didn't have anything else and we would have to wait 15-20 minutes. My husband asked if we could sit upstairs as we saw some cushion chairs up there and she said they were not serving up there. We asked for an exception and she said absolutely not...really? She said we could sit in the bar area if we wanted..we made a reservation lady! My husband asked to speak to the owner and the lady said we could call on Monday. We asked for a business card and she would only give us her business card as she was the manager. We obviously left and were SO disappointed and upset at the service.
I was really looking forward to eating at this place as I am a 4th generation native. I will NOT recommend this place to anyone!!! I hope this place shuts down soon and a new restaurant goes in with customer service!
What a wonderful place to be lost in at. I can see why there are people willing to wait for a table in this place. Their salads are delicious and the drinks are just amazing.
This is my favorite restaurant in Denver. The service is outstanding. The food wonderful, and the ambiance and music perfect for a romantic evening. It was my birthday and there were balloons at our table, and a complimentary dessert for me complete with a candle. Oh, and the presentation of the food lovely with a garnish of 2 Cymbidium orchids on the plate.
Bastien's is my FAVORITE.
Everything I've ever had has been perfect!
Fried chicken is best I've had in a long time.
Soups are excellent.
Service is very good and everyone I've taken there LOVE the steaks! Super drinks too.
Don't forget dessert.
Come on 4 or more stars?.
We used to eat here years ago. It was nice. Retro, inexpensive, decent but NOT great food.
We had not been back in some years. We were asked when we got there if we had a reservation. At Bastiens? The place is never full.
Then we got the menu. Had not eaten there in years. And the prices were...well high. For the Bastiens of old. Maybe this was a new Bastiens. I mean, there were no more one tooth waitresses...
So I had the $20 chicken dinner. Jebus. Everyone else from the pasta to the steak was thinking, what the hell.I am paying this much for this little. This little service (are you ready to order yet? How about now? How about now?), flavor? Quality?
I specifically asked if the chicken gravy was homemade. Yes. It was poo. Pure crap. And tasted like beef gravy out of a jar.
Four meals and four glasses of wine for $140 including the tip. Do not waste your time. This place was worth lerss than half that.
Bastien's Comments. We were party of 7 meeting for Tuesday evening of fun. I had heard alot about the history of the place and looked forward to being with friends. First, I will say the food was great. Probably the best 'hamburger' I've ever had. That's where it ends. The service was very slow. The pricing was too expensive. And the drinks were suspect. One of the members of our party said his margarita tasted like soda. The wine glasses appeared to be less than 4 oz and pricey for house wine. The owner was on-site and when asked casually a question about getting drinks, she rudely informed me I would have to wait for my waitress. While we had a fun night with friends, I would not return for the experience.
Just so-so.
I've read many rave reviews of this place, and being very close to us we wanted to try it. I have to say I was pretty disappointed. The sugar steak was pretty tough and not very flavorful. The vegetables were unpeeled carrots that were barely cooked, and some brown broccoli. My wife's salmon tasted farmed and not very fresh. The twice-baked potato was pretty good though. Service was slow despite it being a Wednesday night, and worst of all she forgot our 5-year-old's grilled cheese sandwich. Not until she came out to ask how our food was did she say "Oh, the cook must have forgotten it!" like it wasn't her job. In the end he loved the grilled cheese, but that was the highlight of the evening.
Maybe it was the coupon we used or something, but we won't be going back with or without a coupon. The atmosphere had potential, though it's starting to seem kind of seedy.
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST STEAK EVER!!.
We were looking for a steakhouse to take out-of-town guests - nothing was available downtown so the search was expanded - we came across several reviews and decided to try this out-of-the-way gem - Boy, are we glad we did! A distinctive looking round-octagon shaped building right on Colfax, just west of Colorado belies the great ambiance and food you will find inside.
Tastefully decorated with cozy tables for 4 (large groups must arrange ahead of time as they do not have tables to seat parties larger than 6). Full bar service, pages and pages of Steaks, Chicken and Fish and Desserts to die for! Large, filling portions, moderately priced averaging $20-25/plate, salad and veggie included. Desserts homemade on premises. Service was prompt and available when needed, staff was very knowledgeable about the menu offerings, suggestions taken made for excellent choices, steaks cooked to perfection.
Lastly, I must comment on the music - 30's & 40's Big Band, Swing and Jazz including Sinatra, Dorsey, Goodman, Ellington, Basie and more - many were USO and live radio recordings - a perfect compliment to a perfect evening. We are already planning a return visit.
great service. Good to know that I can count on this place to have consistantly good service and not have to worry about it being slow or off.
A hidden gem of a steak house!.
Okay...we live in Denver and are surrounded by a million steakhouses. BUT...that shouldn't prevent you from giving Bastien's a try. This is one of the funkiest little places you'll find, and the Sugar Steaks (yes, really...it's a steak rubbed down in sugar) is wonderful!!
As soon as you walk in you get the feeling that time has stood still! The decor is so very retro but it's great! It's hard to put into words, but when you step in you'll get it.
The price is another plus. You won't fork over an arm and a leg to get a full meal, including a delightful salad in addition to your meat course. The bar is fully stocked as well, so ask for a cosmo (or something retro...just work with the atmosphere!) and enjoy.
