Favorite steakhouse! Sugar steak is the best..
You would not know it driving down colfax and from the outsite of the building, but this Steakhouse is a GEM in the Denver area.
From the outside of this octagon shaped building I would have NEVER have dined there, but a freind referred us to Bastien's over a year ago and now this is our favorite Steakhouse hangout...We love the Steak Bryan and the Sugar Steak.
This is a place to try only once and you'll either love it or hate it, we LOVE it!
Wonderful steak and soup.. I walked in to the bar area to sit at the bar, "I was lucky no one was smoking" to find a relaxing place to unwind. I ordered iced tea and was served freshly brewed tea that actually tasted like tea. The lady taking my order was jovial as were the other two customers present, giving the place a "Cheers" feel. When my soup came out it tasted so good i had to gobble it down. I forget exactly what it was called but cream and potatoes were the major ingredients. It would have been great by itself as a larger serving in the winter. The steak came out next. They called it a sugar steak and it was perfect, just on the rare side of medium rare, the sugar "caramelized" on the outside sealed the juices in and captured the flavor. I ate the meal in an unhurried state and bypassed the desert menu of fresh pies for fear of exploding. the whole experience was pleasurable. As i left the waitress told me to come back again and sounded as though she meant it. All in all I felt my business was appreciated for a change and I will have to plan a trip back that way again.
Fabulous steaks and burgers and veal and seafood and chicken- you name it they do it. Local, family owned and not a chain and nothing is alacart. Appetizers are fresh and inventive. YUMMO!.... Whwer to eat a lot of fabulous food at a really reasonable price and the decor makes it more fun along with the "feels like family" atmosphere and service.
Top 5 Denver Restaurant. Bastien's is one of my absolute favorite places to dine in Denver. I've lived here for 13 years and Bastien's has always been a staple for me. This place is not for snobs or idiots that would rather eat at Chili's (see review 2nd after this one). This place is not trying to be anything but what it is- a great steak house with brilliant service, an incredible Lemoncello cocktail and the type of ambiance no chain restaurant could EVER pull off. Our service has never been short of EXCELLENT. The escargot is a favorite of mine, as is the steak with craw fish and sauce. As the GM of a busy Larimer Square restaurant, I know great service, and I know great food, and obviously, I cannot say enough about this place. Drop your pretension and save some bucks at this wonderful and amazingly affordable restaurant. The aforementioned idiot who also mentioned they expected to see a call girl or ex-con is right- and that's one of the reasons this restaurant is a Colfax gem! Bastien's has been around for a long time for a reason, so go check it out- I hope you'll find it to be the wonderful destination I know it is. Cheers to Eric and all the staff!!!!
Best kept Secret!.
After passing by many of times, my curiosity got the best of me, and I stopped in for dinner.
WOW! Right out of the gate I know I had found a new staple. The ambiance draws you in right away.
After drooling over the menu, for quite some time, I finally decided to try the house special and get the Sugar Steak. A NY strip with a delicious caramelized glaze, and good sized at that! I complemented the steak with the garlic mashed potatoes. After dinner I had to indulge in one of there famous desserts. The skillet pie came highly recommended, I chose the apple. What a great finishing touch!
The wait staff was extremely friendly and made me feel right at home. Long story short Bastien's was a great find and i would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great meal and comfortable atmosphere!
60 40, Usually food is good, everything else is bad...
Building is old and tired, look's horrible from the street (colfax) inside is old & dingy, some 40's theme with dust bunnys galore. Bar is somthing you see in an ex con movie looks wise. I expected to see a "Call Girl" with a john in the corner any second. Had it not been recommended we would have walked out as soon as we walked in. Service depends, 60% is fair-good, 40% is bad-horrible. Even with a reservation you will not be seated promptly. I ordered my steak med. rare stress on the rare, it came med. well done, the host or waiter or whoever he is was very rude, arguing with me that it was a perfect med. rare steak, and basically I did'nt know what I was talking about. Other time's he's nice as can be, unless you say something negative about any of the food, like the sour tasting steak I had to turn back to the kitchen today. Waitstaff is usually not very friendly, and hard to get over to the table, the bus boy was great. There are 3 storys, and depending on where you sit, you could be looking at other customer's feet, booth tables are very small with the large plates & if multiple people are dining with you. Food is 80% good, the mignon is usually very yummy (except for the sour taste this time, and being overcooked twice) Sugar Steak... I dont understand the hype, it was ok, not something to order more then once a year, I would rather take a Chili's Ribeye to a Sugar Steak anyday. A nice vegi combo come's with every meal, twice baked potato is lacking, usually mashed is good, they do have wonderful home made almost yard stick long breaksticks with seasoned dipping butter. Deserts are generally good, except for the sponge cake one which was very dry, the whip cream and fruit topping did nothing to help.
Overall I like the food, dislike the building look in/outside, they need to update and CLEAN, and most all the waitstaff is rude, slow, and has no reserve about giving an attitude to, or yelling at it's customers. Food pricing is average, drinks are overpriced.
Not Even Close to the Best!. The idea that this is the best brunch in Denver is ridiculous. The food at Bastien's was acceptable, nothing more, and anybody who thinks it's better than Le Central or Lucille's is out of their mind. San Antonio omlette was topped with jarred salsa, not homemade. Potatoes were overcooked. Coffee was blah. Waitress acted like we were putting her out. Just average.
5 Star w/o the 5 star price.
My fiancee and I were visiting Denver and had decided we really wanted a steak for dinner. We checked out City Search ... Bastiens was on the list ... had good reviews ... but we were both on the fence about whether it sounded good enough to go. After some debating ... we went.
From the outside ... my first thought was this place is going to be a joke ... it looks like a very old, unkempt, building. When we walked inside we were pleasantly surprised. It was definitely nicer than the outside. The wood bar, when you first walk in, is where we made our home for the night. The bartender ... I wish I could remember his name ... was excellent. Timely, attentive, friendly service.
We ordered steaks ... I had the special ... a ny strip steak with gorgonzola and chiant reduction ... amazing!!!! My fiancee had the sugar steak. I know ... sugar and steak sound like a terrible combination, but it was fantastic. A perfectly cooked, medium rare ny strip, with a hint of sweet. My fiancee and I both agreed it was the best steak we have probably ever had.
The atmosphere is very relaxed with air of comfort from family and friends.
The dessert was only ok, but everything else was 5 star without the 5 star price.
Fantastic food; great atmosphere; family business. Darn near everything on the menu (although I haven't sampled it all, yet) is a taste treat. The signature sugar steak is a wonderful medley of taste and texture - juicy and tender throughout. The monthly specials are not to be missed as they are unique and tasty. Although the exterior silhouette of the building is low, the interior is surprisingly open and spacious. The outdoor patio is unexpectedly cozy thanks to branches and miniature lights woven through the wrought iron. In spite of being located just off Colfax, the patio is nicely intimate. The staff (many of whom are the children or grandchildren of the founder) are knowledgable and friendly. If you don't know what to try, just ask! The holiday meals and special occasion menus are fantastic. Bastiens is our first choice for a special night out.
Great steak, great service. Bastien's is a Denver treasure - you can't tell it from the outside, which makes it all the more charming. The service was excellent, the sugar steak is out-of-this-world. Also worth trying are the Black Russian cake and the appetizer gnocchi. Everything we had at Bastien's was great!
