Great Authentic German Food
by jeffking45
I've been around German food all my life and cook it at home often. If you're serious about Deutsche food, then this is your place. The schnitzel was crisp and tender (it's a butter fried veal cutlet folks, not a sausage) and I had it with potatoes and the best sauerkraut I've had in many, many years. The house salad (with genuine german dressing) , warm bread and a glass of Rhine wine is worth the trip by itself. Make sure you come very hungry! The service is a little slow (it's not a big restaurant) but very attentive and friendly. Don't order the Long Island Iced Tea, my girlfriend would've passed out after one! Make sure you have reservations.
great service, terrible food

I was so looking forward to trying out Cafe Berlin and the food was very disappointing. I didn't have to live in Austria for a year to know the food was just terrible. My Weinerschnitzel was lukewarm and tasteless. The meat was not tender and the breading was not crisp. The Knorr sauce on the dumplings was bland and overpowering. My friend's Paprickaschnitzel was equally flavorless and over-sauced. Our salmon appetizer was a hard chunk of something that probably was fish. The waiter was great and the hostess who kept checking on us was very friendly.
German authenticity

Cafe Berlin has long been a favorite of Denverites and it's easy to understand why. If you like German food, there simply is no other place in Denver to have it! The spaetzle is some of the best I have ever had, the bar is charming and the service/management is hospitable and charming. Although the menu isn't extremely varied, it does contain the usual schnitzels, beers and streudels. Definitely come hungry!
- Pros: Authentic, dependable German fare
- Cons: Too bad they moved to this downtown location
