The Scene
This 8,500-square-foot home was built in the 1890s by a Scot who had amassed a fortune in lumber. In 1991, innkeeper Walter Keller found it abandoned and condemned. Now this architectural treasure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guests in this always-full establishment are honeymooners, business travelers or locals who just want to be spoiled for a weekend.
The Details
Because this is the former home of a Victorian lumber baron, it's a showcase of elaborately carved woodwork both in the public rooms and the antique-appointed suites. Each of the five accommodations has a private bath with whirlpool tub, a telephone, air conditioning and radio. Big and hearty breakfasts are served in the elegant, wood-paneled dining room, out in the garden or, sometimes, in bed. Ask for the specialty of the house--crème caramel-stuffed French toast.
