Decidedly average. Hot Cakes is OK if you are hungry and just want to get food into you. The staff sure are friendly but often too busy to pay much attention to all their tables - it can take 15-20 minutes before one even gets to order. I don't blame that on the staff though - they really do their best and are very professional. The food is really average - no culinary flair going on here. I think 'pedestrian' is a good descriptive. The bread is supermarket plastic wrapped bread; no substance, no flavor. I'm a girl who likes her espresso and cappuccino like it's meant to be; even using the espresso machine here, the coffee is not great. Not sure if it's the coffee they use, or the machine. Long story short, if you just want some breakfast to keep your stomach from growling till lunch, this place is fine. If, like me, you want to use up your weekend calories (after being a healthy eater all week) on a yummy, special breakfast, try elsewhere.

Don't bother. There's a reason it's located across from a hospital! It used to be good, with fresh items on the menu but now it's just like any other greasy spoon. The service is spotty and the food is mediocre. Also, certain wait staff actually complain about a 20 percent tip! These people are lucky they have jobs, with all of the great brunch options in Denver. Do yourself a favor and just skip it.

Decent Quick Breakfast Eats. This was my first visit to Hot Cakes and I wasn't incredibly impressed. The food that our group got was all good. I had the Midwestern Skillet which had a great overall taste but I was a little disappointed in the blandness of the gravy. My wife got the Heath Nutty Pancakes and loved them. The biggest strike against Hot Cakes was the coffee. The coffee that we had was weak and lacked the bold flavor you expect from a good breakfast joint. No one got refills, so maybe it was just the one brew. Otherwise our experience was good. We didn't have to wait to be seated. They were really speedy with the food. Our waitress Lindsey was extremely nice and helpful when asked for advice.
