Editorial Review for Strings – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
The bright dining room features huge windows and white walls splashed with colorful modern designs. Lawyers and socialites nosh and chat around the white-clothed tables. The seasonal menu features appetizers including crab cakes, carpaccio or a grilled artichoke. The signature entree is penne bagutta, served with chicken, mushrooms and creamy tomato sauce. Another standout entree is the pumpkin seed-crusted trout served with spicy green mole. A warm Mexican chocolate cake makes a fine dessert.

I'm not a big fan of Strings, but I am a fan of Jason Sheehan's. I've been reading his reviews since he started and I'm pretty sure he has never reviewed Strings. So... blame the kitchen, not the critic.

My first experience at Strings was disappointing. I went with two friends on a Monday night. The service was excellent, the bread was great, but the meal wasn't at all what I expected from the reputation or the price. I ordered the New York Strip steak, and asked that it be cooked rare. The steak was somewhat overcooked, but that wasn't so bad -- I expect that, honestly. The potatoes on the side were overly salty, and the side-dish of sauteed spinach was so salty as to be inedible. The dessert wasn't that great either -- the mousse cake had a flavorless, cakelike crust that didn't go at all well with the mousse. The coffee, however, was wonderful. Again, the service was great, but I won't be back, nor will I recommend the restaurant to friends.

Pros: Great service, delicious bread, excellent martini

Cons: The food wasn't good, was poorly seasoned and hadn't been tasted before leaving the kitchen.
