In Short
This ancient building on west Colfax remains one of Denver's prime music venues. The molding that surrounds the stage, ceiling and parts of the walls is as intricate and ornate as any gingerbread-covered mansion. Recent renovations--including an intimate wrap-around balcony, enlarged stage and improved sight lines--increase capacity and ensure there isn't a bad seat in the house. Two bars are downstairs. During rowdy shows, the area by the stage can become a mosh pit.

Up until my last visit at this venue I had enjoyed the intimate atmosphere of the shows. That was before I met "bessy", the nasty unfriendly security guard at the front door. It was a 16 and older show, and my wife had left her ID in her wallet, which for security reasons she left at home (my wife doesn't drink). Bessy told us we couldn't enter because of the ID issue, even after explaining that we would miss the show if we drove back, then proceeded to get nasty and tell us "Why do you think I'm standing here in the cold, for my health???". At that point, having been treated so rudely, I responded in kind, and was fairly rude to the security guard and was then refused entry to the show. The manager wasn't interested in our story, as she was happy to keep our ticket money and not allow entry based on Bessy's side of the story. Refunding our ticket would have been the customer-centric thing to do, especially after having to deal with Bessy, but apparently The Ogden isn't interested in customer service.

I came here for the George Clinton & Parliament show. Concerts here sound good, but it's hard to see if you're a short person. General admission is standing room only. The audience is set at tiered levels looking down at the stage, but each tier can be 10 to 20 people deep. So you'll have a great view of the back of someone's head instead of the stage. Fillmore is definitely better in that the audience is down below and looking upwards at the stage. Ogden segregates the under-21 from the over-21, so make sure you go in the correct side of the stage or you'll be wondering why there's no alcohol available. Alcohol prices are comparable to Fillmore (i.e., expensive) so drink up before coming here. Restroom had adequate stalls and there was not a wait throughout the show.
