Lakewood >El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant
Great food and Great Service.
I have eaten here about 2 dozen times in the past 2 years. The service has always been great. They are friendly, prompt, and very accommodating. They go the extra mile (eg. the menu says extra charge for 2nd basket of chips and salsa but I have never been charge extra even after eating 3 baskets).
The food is very delicious (I have eaten mexican all over the country and colorado is the best, but el tapatio in golden is right up there with the authentic experience you get on federal in Denver...Iowa has pretty darn good Mexican food too!)
Anyway, take reviews with a grain of salt. I suspect the bad reviews were people that had a chip on their shoulder for some reason or another. I have never seen or experienced bad service or food at this place. I have recommended it to friends and they have confirmed my sentiments about tapatio also! Try the Michilada Preperado if you like spicy and delicious!
El Tapatio Sliding. . .Badly.
From reading the reviews on this site, it appears that things have changed at El Tapatio. They have apparently gone from pretty darn good in '07 to horrendous in July 2011.
It doesn't appear that management is carefully watching two things: 1. Food Quality and 2. waitstaff training and performance. We have had a number of regular meetings at two locations and the waitstaff consistently has an "attitude" about serving people who are not at all demanding. At the first location (Wadsworth/Hampden) waitstaff was offering water to everyone in the bar area waiting for beer/wine/margs!!! These meetings of 30-50 people were on off nights (Tues), there was no problem with being too busy. On one occasion the waitstaff individual felt he was entitled to $100 tip for bar service. It appears that he had misinterpreted or had been misinformed by the manager as to what could be expected .
We tried the Golden location and it appeared that the waitstaff was again not being managed there either. Three separate servers were reluctantly working the patio until it was time for the checks, when no one wanted to present one for 20 minutes.
We want to support El Tapatio, but after several months of disappointing performance in 2011, my suggestion is to look elsewhere. Surely in the Denver area you can do better.
Dont order the Margs.
They have 2 sizes and dont tell you the price! The large is almost a fish bowl (about $25)and the small costs more than most of their entree dishes.
Good Mexican Food for a Good Price.
I don't understand the horrible reviews that this El Tapatio location has been receiving lately. I live somewhat nearby and I end up going there at least once every two weeks. Is it the best Mexican food I've had? No, but it's a nice place to relax. They're always willing to customize my order (I don't eat red meat), and you can get in and out quickly if you need to.
Admittedly I've only tried one other El Tapatio location (on S. Wadsworth, didn't like the decor or the waitstaff at all!), so I can't tell you if you would have a better experience at different locations.
Horrible Food.. Worstest Service Ever At Any Restruant's.
Was off work early one Friday even so a few friends and I decided to meet up and grab dinner and catch up on things. After 10 minutes of brain storming where to go for a new taste, a friend says, "heck lets try that new mexican restruant that used to be bennigans".
I wasnt too picky with the choice and thought some beef taco's and a few drinks with my old friends could hurt. We enter the near empty parking lot around 5pm, after enter the front door we were left waiting for 5 minutes until a single worker would even notice 4 men waiting for some sort of service or reply.
A young lady greeted us a few seconds later.. seatting us a the booth near one of the windows. We ordered a few drinks while deciding what to have to eat. Sad to say again... our drinks did not come out until another 5 minutes at the very least while there bar tender is talking to 2 other workers. I felt like we were being under minded or some sort.. the vide wasnt too friendly the simplest request for some hot sauce or extra napkin would yield you a up setting face and moody persona.
After that we decided we should just order since it might take 15 minutes just for a 4 person. Needless to say the food was sloopy thrown on the the place, a friend's beans was dripping over his plate while the server rushed to our table and toss it to one of us. The food was no where near AUTHETHIC OR GREAT AS THEY WOULD WISH IT TO BE but they could of at least been a little more curteous and have a little integrity.
We were out trying to experience new food and enjoy a little time catching up, but we ended up with horrible food, service that McDonalds could top, and a $112 bill.
Money isnt a issue if you felt your service was fair and food was above average for the most of us. But if you want a honest opinion, stay away from this shady place and treat your family out to Santiago's which has amazing service and great food as well.. if not your local Olive's Garden or John's Carrino has got a lot more to offer and you will surely be greeted within 2 minutes with individuals with great attitude. ( on a special nights out the last thing you want is to have your day ruin by people in a bad mood and ready to take it upon the very next few peole they see )
I hope this helps those who review this comments.
This restruant is known for bad service upon a little extra research.
Terrible. Awful.. Because we live in the area, we thought we'd try El Tapatio. I didn't want to stuff myself, so I ordered the beef taco and enchilada from the ala carte selection. The enchilada was, I think, one step up from opening my cat's canned food and dining on that. The sauce was not awful, just the flavor of the beef itself. I don't want to really think about why it was so inedible, for I've had far superior meals at Taco Bell, and that isn't saying much. I was hungry, but I couldn't take more than two bites of either the taco or burrito. My husband's burrito tasted like the restaurant had just poured a can of store-bought gravy over the meat, wrapped in in a tortilla, and called it a burrito. For a restaurant that says it's food is fresh, I couldn't taste that. I tasted can, can, can, and bad cans at that. I can say without hesitation that this was the worst Mexican food I have ever had. My advice: stay away.
Not the best by far..
We tried the El Tapatio on So. Wadsworth. We heard the raves about the original on W. Alameda so when this one opened it was on our must try list.
The atmosphere is fairly nice and the service as I said, proved to be outstanding from the start. The restaurant did not yet have a license so we could not start with cocktails, which may have helped the blandness of the food.
I was surprised by the charge for additional baskets of chips with salsa. While the chips themselves are very good, and the salsa also enjoyable for most of our party (I have an aversion to cilantro so didn't enjoy it much) but the additional charge for more is just one indication of what we perceived to be overpriced food.
The cheese enchilada plate was standard fare. An option of green chile may have kicked it up. The taco salad, also very urban. I will admit that I wish there had been more salad greens, which I guess is not what many want.
The combination plate was reported as again boring with the exception of the Chicken Burrito which not only was enjoyed by that party member, caused a sweat to break out.
The final member of our party had fajitas. No real report there, but he didn't leave any on the plate, so I will assume the dish was good.
I will probably try them again. If I find it better the next time around, I will readily share. There have been just too many positive posts on too many sites for this to be the norm for this restaurant.
As it stands now, I'd much rather eat at Santiagos or the Moose Hill Cantina.
Best Wait Staff in all of Denver!. The food is just like when I was in Guadalajara. It would be nice if they got a big screen TV and showed soccer matches though. Tacos al Carbon, Enchiladas Mole... anything on the Platillos Mexicanos menu is fantastico!
Wonderful. This is by far the best Mexican food/atmosphere I have ever encountered in Colorado. Growing up, I always prided myself on finding good Mexican food, and finally I have found a place that I cannot say anything bad about. The service is great, the food even better, and on weekends, this place can actually be hard to get into due to the tremendous amount of people that choose to dine here. Definitely a must have if you are into great food and a fun time. Even good for first dates.
great food. i found this great resturant by accident i was shopping at danelli bridals next door and found the best margaritas and salsa ever, the resturant is amazingly clean, the staff is friendly and the food is great. what a pleasent suprise!
