I found Tom's when hunting for live lobsters for a Birthday celebration and a Safeway Seafood clerk sent me over. I have now been going to Tom's for several years and have NEVER been disappointed. I live near downtown and happily make the drive whenever I want something special. His prices are reasonable for the quality. I won't even bother with Whole Food's seafood anymore - often times it looks great but too often disappoints. I buy fish from Tom's that I use for sushi, sashimi, crudo and very lightly marinated Ceviche and have always been absolutely thrilled!! His filets are cut beautifully and I never get stringy connective tissue bits in the tuna or salmon. Everything always smells fresh and tastes delicious! Whenever I am having a party or other special occasion I call Tom, tell him what I'm looking for and let him help me figure out what to order. He is a genius about figuring out portions. He is happy to make suggestions about preparing the fish and often has beautiful cuts of beef available for a quick surf and turf. Tom's may be one of the last places left in the Metro area that can provide things like salt cod and lutefisk. If you want something special I recommend you call ahead and order in advance. His oysters are SO GOOD that they knocked the socks off a friend from the East Coast visiting last Spring. I am always proud to serve the fish I get from Tom's.

Pros: Service, no charge for special orders, knowledgable staff

Cons: It is pricey - but it's FRESH seafood!

I have passed a fish market on west Alameda everday, finally stopped in yesterday and was happily suprised. This guy calls the boat captains in Hawaii every night to find out what they caught during the day, then orders his cuts sent via air to arrive here on ice in the morning. I had forgotten how good real fresh fish is! (I admit I got used to "re-freshed" aka "previously frozen" seafood at Whole Foods). (And we can't even mention King Soopers and seafood in the same sentence, can we?) Across Alameda Parkway from the Vitamin Cottage. The guy's name is, get this, Tom. He took a beating from the snowstorms, and lost some customers to the new Whole Foods in BelMar, so please try to stop by sometime to support his business. BTW cash and checks only, no credit cards, ATM nearby. Beautiful FRESH fish, clams, oysters, mussels. Wow.
