Not for Special Occasion. I made a reservation and requested a specific table one month before my spouses birthday. I was called 3 hours before dinner to be informed that our table was not available.

We used to dine there frequently but will never return for a special or any other occasion.

The lack of concern was also a turn off.

We went to Steak House Ten instead and had an amazing dinner and were treated like royalty.

Cafeteria Dinning At It’s Worst. You would usually have to travel to a junior high school cafeteria to get food of this caliber. Their food supplier is no doubt the same company that supplies the state’s correctional facilities as the food has all the flavor of institutional grade grub. The beer menu is equally terrible consisting primarily of coors products. It’s a shame that this restaurant is so bad because it’s in a nice location in the heart of Golden. About the only positive comment that can be made about this establishment is that it is very dog friendly, allowing 4 leggers in the outdoor seating areas.

That'll Do, Pig.. It's ok... If you're looking for a big, tasty burger, fries, a beer and you have some hungry kids, this place totally rocks. The historic location is sure to intrigue and you'll have to keep your kids from playing in the old vault.

You can get the best crock of French Onion soup around and everything is served with an apple and Texas Toast. French dip is one of my favorites and don't listen to the guy that slammed the pastrami... I'm from New York and it'll do just fine.

The menu hasn't changed in 10 years even though it was expected after the fire that nearly destroyed the place years ago. However, it offers some level of comfort to the locals that might just be craving that old favorite standby comfort food (like the colossal baked potato) in the middle of January. The salads are tasty and massive (as is every other dish) and they are happy to split the plate at no extra charge.

If you want a more ecclectic menu and more beverage choices, go to Table Mountain Inn or The Bridgewater Grill.

Don't Go!. We went here 1 year ago and had a bad experience. The thick meatloaf my husband had ordered was barely 1/2". We did complain about that and we got a coupon for $30.00 off our next meal. We never really wanted to go back but why waste this coupon? We went last month and I ordered ribs, something I never order in a restaurant. They were tough and tasted like they had cooked them yesterday, and were dried out and tasteless.

The worse part of our whole dining experience was the noise! We were seated in the hallway between the bar and the back room, in a booth next to a big table of loud, drunk college aged people. I don't even want to talk about it much but let's just say we could hardly hear ourselves think, let alone talk to each other. They were horribly obnoxious. I'd like a quiet dining experience when I eat and I am not into the partying bar scene.

We'll never go again. The food is expensive and is not worth it.

Don't order a Bloody Mary or the Pastrami. If you want a good Bloody Mary, DON’T order one at the Old Capital Grill in Golden. When I asked our waitress how they were, she said great. Apparently she has never had a Bloody Mary…it was thin, weak, watery, pale, anemic looking even! The celery salt was overpowering. I had to fish the olive out with my fork, as well as the huge piece of tough celery that was 2 inches shorter than the glass.

If you order the Pastrami sandwich, ask for it grilled so you have half a chance of picking it up. The bread was too thin for the amount of meat heaped in a big ball in the center, then the sandwich was cut on the diagonal. The meat had apparently been grilled, and lost all of its tenderness and flavor, and be prepared to reassemble it before you attempt picking it up so you can get some meat out to the edges. This would have been horrible had I not asked to have swiss cheese added, which I’m sure they charged extra for.

I would have sent back the drink and the sandwich had our waitress bothered to come by after each was delivered to check on us, but by the time she cruised back we were nearly finish (uh, I mean fed up…).

My husband and I go out to lunch every Saturday and Sunday, supporting our local restaurants through these hard times, but we won’t be going back to the Old Capital Grill in Golden.

P.S. if you want a great Bloody Mary, go to Ruby Tuesday on Wadsworth in Arvada just north of I-70. You will say WOW with every sip.

Tired Food. We have tried the Old Capitol Grill a few times, each time hoping and wanting a good experience. Sadly, we have always been let down. The food, no matter how simple, has been horrible. The service has always left something to be desired, and the atmosphere is lacking. If you are coming to Golden, try New Peach Garden (across the street and downstairs), Table Mountain Inn, or Ali Baba's.

Dont let the location fool you. Two years ago the place was nearly destroyed by fire and certain death would have been the best outcome. But like a bad dream there would be a reincarnation. Instead of a fresh approach that should have included a new and creative chef, an interesting atmosphere and the opportunity to be something different, the path of least resistance was chosen. Just like the first go around, the food at the Old Capital Grill tastes just like it?s name; antiquated and tasteless. I have tried many times to give this restaurant another chance by literally dragging myself thru the front door for at least eight years. I have tried a handful of items on the menu and everything has the same flavor - wet cardboard. Even a hamburger (which any restaurant can cook) can?t be served at this establishment without putting it on a crumbling and stale bun. The only thing you can count on is cold beer from the Coors brewery - just like every other establishment that is within minutes of the historic location. Thank God for The Golden City Brewery, The Briarwood and McDonalds.
