Editorial Review for Ski Cooper Ski Resort – by Shannon Luthy Lukens
The Basics
Ski Cooper started during World War II as part of Camp Hale, a training ground for ski soldiers, who later distinguished themselves in combat. (After the war, many distinguished themselves by returning to Colorado to launch ski areas such as Aspen and Vail.) The area is steeped in history, as is Leadville, just a few miles up the road.
Family Fun
An easy two-hour drive from Denver and an ideal place to take the family for a quick and inexpensive day of skiing, the 1,200 vertical feet of terrain, all of it rated for beginners and intermediates, is rarely crowded. The top of Ski Cooper rests on the Continental Divide, providing spectacular views of Colorado's two highest mountains: Mount Elbert (14,433 feet) and Mount Massive (14,421). Backcountry powder skiing is available and more than 1,800 acres of tree skiing and open bowls provide the perfect outlet for advanced skiers in need of a powder fix.
