Red Square Euro Bistro

Contemporary European cuisine & vodka bar

  • Writer Square location
  • Pre-Theatre Dining
  • Contemporary European Cuisine

Red Square Euro Bistro is staffed with the old crew of the Russian Cafe on Larimer Square. Equal parts contemporary European cooking and traditional Russian fare, the restaurant has developed some intriguing specialties.

Long-time patrons of the Russian Cafe will again be able to savor the traditional Beef Stroganoff, Goulash and Vareniki that have become Denver favorites. Others will favor the new lighter, more European fare prepared by renowned chef Maxim Ionikh.

The decor is an elegant combination of art deco furnishings and traditional Russian accents. The expanded floor plan includes several intimate eating areas: the main dining room--complete with fireplace--the upper dining area, a cozy lounge and a private VIP dining area that can comfortably seat 25. And, of course, a well-stocked vodka bar. The inclusive patio is an oasis in the middle of Downtown Denver.

Editorial Review for Red Square Euro Bistro – by Wendy Wall

In Short
The decor includes deep-red walls, dark hardwoods, whimsical artwork and white tablecloths. Icicle-style glass lamps dangle above tables, and a fireplace adds to the cozy feel. A contemporary vodka bar attracts a young after-work crowd, while in the main dining rooms appeal to an older set. Russian chef Maxim Ionikh skillfully presents European cuisine, including beef stroganoff and Kuritsa, a chicken breast rubbed with tarragon-lemon butter, roasted garlic and thyme jus.

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

When the weather is nice, opt for the private patio. It's tucked back in Writer Square with a view of passers-by, instead of drivers-by.

The Extras

Vodkas from around the world abound here, with Russian brands dominating the list. Infusions may be sweet or peppery, but most guests prefer to drink it straight up.

I live downtown. I work at the Brown Palace as a bartender, and am very familiar with the industry. I also frequent many of the bars downtown, but I have yet to try the Red Square until a few nights ago. I had heard they serve many infused vodkas, and Baltica which is a beer that is hard to find in Denver. My wife and I decided to have dinner to check out the Red Square. Wow. Big mistake. We arrived at the restaraunt, which from the patio, appeared to be crowded and busy. (there were young children running around). While my wife waited outside, READING THE MARQUIS OFFERING THE NIGHTLY SPECIALS, I went inside to request a table. A man that appeared to be very drunk approached me and said, "you can't be in here". I had no idea who he was and i assumed he was a parton of the bar that had too much to drink. I walked into the bar, and the bartender asked me what I wanted to drink. The bartender looked casualy dressed, like a friend of somebody, he was waering no uniform, obviously not a person that worked there. No sooner had I opened my mouth, than the same man approched me (he was extremely intoxicted might I add) and told me, in exactly these words,"Get the F*** out. I own this bar." I was shocked that the owner of a restaraunt would actually say something like this to somebodyy that walked in off the street, bringing his wife out for a special evening, wanting to spend his money for a quality meal. He repeated "Get the FU** out. This is a private party." My wife was standing at the patio, saw the entire thing happen, (could see that I was visially becoming angry) and walked in to grab me so we could leave. After we had left, she told me that the people on the patio were extremely rude and harrassing to her while she waited for me. If a bar is closed, why would they leave a sign outside advertising their menu? Isint there a law in Denver against CLOSING YOUR BAR TO THE PUBLIC AND ILLEGALLY SERVING ALCOHOL? VERY UNPROFESSIONAL.

Pros: NONE

Cons: Very unprofessional

My boyfriend and I love this place. We have been there three years in a row for Valentine's Day. The menu is a bit small, but we haven't had a bad dish yet. The steak stroganoff sounds like a weird idea, but trust me- it is fantastic. In addition, the service is always good. On a side note, I have found coupons for this place (pay $50 for a $100 coupon) so search the internet to find them as they are worth it!

Pros: great food

Cons: small menu
