Sushi Mara

Serving traditional and contemporary cuisine

  • Serving premium quality Sushi
  • Lafayette's only Sushi Bar
  • Open every night

Only ten minutes from the traffic and lines of downtown Boulder, Lafayette's Sushi Mara combines all the amenities of big-city sushi with the more personalized effects of a small-town eatery. The only joint for raw fish and sake for eight miles in any direction, this rare east Boulder jewel is the latest culinary gem from the experienced trio of restaurateurs who opened the prominent Magnolia last year. Sharing an entrance with Magnolia Steak and Seafood, Sushi Mara holds the same high standards of quality as its sister establishment, serving premium quality fish often flown in direct from Hawaii. With an attention to detail not possible in the high-turnover kitchens of more metro restaurants, Sushi Mara's two chefs prepare and present plates that amount to high art, which astound and please sushi addicts and novices alike.

Editorial Review for Sushi Mara – by Ephraim Mallery

The cozy dining area offers romantic seating by the fire as well as larger tables for groups of friends and family. Some prefer sitting at the bar, where the attentive chefs are eager to please with favorite cuts and exotic nightly specials. In addition to the classic options, choose from several unique rolls: crunchy tuna with citrus aioli, white fish and vegetables wrapped in cucumber rather than rice, and shrimp tempura with beef tenderloin.

This restaurant is awesome. The sushi is always fresh and delicious and the service is super friendly. They have interesting and exciting specials. The sushi chefs try their best to make your experience fun. Its a cheers type environment where if you're a regular everyone knows your name and even better, your drink order. The waitress is always super sweet but she can get busy when the room fills up so put in your requests early and be patient. If you live in the area put this place on your list of favorites!

So I've read all the pros and cons about this little sushi joint and I'd have to say there is a little bit of truth to all of it. The sushi is absolutely outstanding and I don't think that this point can be at all contested. The fish comes in daily except for Sundays - per the chefs. It's obvious that this sushi staff cares a great deal about what they are producing and how it comes out. I'm always blown away at how beautiful the plates look and my guests always say they'll be back for the food. The specials always are outstanding so I'd recommend those and I can't say there isn't anything I don't like on the sushi menu The room is cozy and quaint but can definitely get loud during the weekends as this place is packed to the gills with waits up to an hour!! Come in early or be prepared to sit at the bar and enjoy one of the best wine lists this side of Boulder City. Just be patient because as I have found out people like to sit in this little restaurant and getting them to leave is painstaking. As the room is small and there are only two chefs the wait for the food can be a little long and the one server a little overwhelmed when it's busy. On the slower nights the service has always been spot on but when it gets too busy it can be hard to flag her down. If you are looking for stellar service I'd say go on the weekdays. All in all this little sushi restaurant is a gem not only to Boulder County but also to Boulder City itself!

Pros: Best Sushi in Boulder
