Editorial Review for Queen of Sheba – by Ephraim Mallery

The Scene
Tucked into a rundown Colfax strip mall, this tiny Ethiopian joint draws adventurous taste buds and African regulars from around the city. The walls are covered with tourist posters, maps, native masks and tapestries. Most tables fit a party of four, while a community table hosts more. The motherly chef-owner simmers the food to perfection as diners wile away the time with conversation.

The Food
Spicy traditional Ethiopian food comes on a gigantic platter of injera, a spongy, porous flatbread used to scoop up the various dishes. Savor tender lamb tips--cubed and simmered with onions and jalapenos. Scoop up spicy red lentils (miser wott) cooked into a thick stew for easier handling. Cool down with yatakelt wott--chunks of soft, lightly seasoned potatoes, carrots and cabbage. Vegetarians have filling options and house honey wine is as sweet as it sounds. Eating with your fingers never tasted so good.

I love this hole in the wall eatery. Everything from its inspired and daring menu to its wonderful staff/owner/cook, I look forward to every meal I have here. The portion sizes are generous and well priced, the wine is inexpensive and complimentary, and the variety of menu items are alway cooked to a perfection and unmatched in other local eateries. While I hope it stays quiet enough for me to always get great service and a table, I hope that others get to experience this wonderful restaruant. The "Queen" definitely keeps it real and I feel lucky to call this my local favorite.

Pros: Wondeful food

Cons: Expect to wait for your food--definitely worth it though!

Zewditu (the owner) makes all of her food with love - love for her customers, love for making good quality food. Eating there is like going to Mom's for a home-cooked meal. Her food is my comfort food. Almost anything you order can be made as mild or spicy as you like. Whether carnivore or vegetarian, you are guaranteed to get a meal that is tasty and unusual, but very satisfying. Be warned - this is "hands-on" eating. You don't get silverware, except to pack up your left-overs. In almost a decade of regular dining, it always puts a spark in my eye, just to say its name. The food is personalized in a relaxing atmostphere of Mom's (or Grandma's) kitchen (without Mom telling you to keep your elbows off the table!). The moderate prices are balanced with an abundance of food (besides, left overs always taste better the next day). Attention coffee lovers: Ethiopian coffee is roasted and ground in-house with each order!! In a day and age where customer service is often a learned skill, at Queen of Sheba, it is the rule of the day. It is natural, it is effortless.

Pros: Home made food in a friendly atmostphere

Cons: This is not "fast food" - each entree is cooked to order & takes time.
