Editorial Review for La Esquina – by Kathleen Squires
The Scene
A sleekly restored diner car doubles as a taqueria and a front for one of the city's most stylish dining destinations. Behind the door marked "Employees Only," down the stairs and through the bowels of the kitchen, lies a gothic vault ornamented with wrought iron gates and dripping candelabras. Clusters of fashion and music types, outfitted in their best dungeon glam, augment the allure.
The Food
Thankfully the unique space doesn't outshine the food, influenced by consultant Richard Ampudia of nearby Cafe Habana. Every step pleases, from skillfully balanced seviches to authentically styled tacos and the generously flavored mains. If the kitchen keeps turning out winners like the soothing, tangy cold avocado and tomatillo soup, a plump, herb-infused whole red snapper, and spongy tortillas stuffed with meats like citrusy, slow-roasted pork, the crowds will persist long after the cachet wanes.

Had heard so much about this place so I went with a friend on a Tuesday night. Getting downstairs was interesting and I thought the space was very cool, if not a bit claustrophobic because of the low basement ceilings. We were seated somewhat promptly and upon looking at the menu, the food was not what we had in mind. No salsa, guac, no frozen margaritas ... and when we asked if they had either it was treated like a silly question. I understand it's not like other Mexican restaurants but it was not absurd to assume these things would be on the menu. We settled on a handful of small plates, all of which were edible but none of which were great. The waiter was okay but generally just seemed annoyed with us. We got the bill and it was pricey, due in part to the fact that they were serving my friend $17 glasses of champagne instead of the $9 glasses she asked for. She pointed it out and he was basically like yes, this is what I brought you. I'm glad I went and there is definitely a uniqueness to the place, but overall, the entire premise is just too cool for school.
Pros: Cool space
Cons: Annoyed waiter, pricey, ok food
