Editorial Review for Rice – by Justin Hartung

In Short
The minimalist brick-and-steel decor of the massively popular, original SoHo location has carried over to its offshoots in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Tribute gets paid to the restaurant's namesake with 10 kinds of rice and accompanying sauces that border-hop through Pan-Asian, Mexican, Italian and Middle Eastern cuisines. Rounding out the menu are a few special entrees, salads with a choice of seven dressings, and unusual sides like edamame humus and Mayalasian jerky.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

In addition to wine and beer, an eclectic variety of nonalcoholic drinks are available, including fresh-pressed juices and, naturally, a roasted rice tea.

The Extras

The appearance of dried apricots and cranberries puts a new spin on marshmallow rice squares.

The food was good when it opened but their menu hasn't changed one bit. One would think they would want to spice it up but they have kept the same old menu. The grilled corn, chicken wings, and veggie meatballs are a must. Although the service is rather quite poor, beyond poor even. The waitresses like to dilly-dally when they're at work, chat with fellow co-workers, and ignore all sorts of eye contact with their customers. However, they are prompt to pick up your tab! On one occasion, every single person in my party got the wrong meal AND the appetizers came twenty minutes later than the entrees. No apologies, no nothing. One particular waitress likes giving a lot of attitude, maybe she doesn't want to be a 37 year old waitress anymore. And another employee, no idea what she does there, just clomps around in her high heels back and forth in this tiny restaurant. And the rest of them just seem so overwhelmed by the customers, like they just don't want to take care of you.. ever. If you're looking for mediocre food and being ignored, then Rice is your place. They probably won't notice or care if they lose you as a customer anyway.
