Tips for Redstone Animal Hospital

November 13, 2012

DO NOT i repeat DO NOT take your pets to Redstone Animal Hospital in Littleton,CO unless you're looking to spend a lot of unnecessary money.

We took our cat there for the first time last week because it was and emergency, they are much closer than our usual vet (she does NOT travel well), and they had decent reviews. We took her in because she was suddenly having trouble eating due to what seemed to be a broken tooth or a dislocated jaw. They barely examined her teeth and told us that she had stage 2 Periodontal disease, possibly even stage three, and we would need to bring her in to have two teeth extracted, have a full on scaling/polishing of her teeth, etc. Then they handed over a bill estimate for $577-$660 dollars, breaking out the cost of "boarding" her for the day (since they require she be dropped off at 7am, but are also a Kennel, so they want to charge for caring for her) dental x-rays, the two extractions, etc. Then they go on to tell us "We want to prepare you that this is best cast scenario, it'll almost certainly be atleast $700...probably more" and they wanted to schedule her a week to two weeks out! Even though SHE WASN'T EATING!! Then we were charged $70 for the appointment, this is after the $25 discount we received for being new patients.

We were afraid that we would have to put her down because it sounded as though she was at the beginning of the end in terms of health, the periodontal disease would potentially be effecting her organs, and without extreme (and expensive!) constant follow-up care that would significantly reduce her quality of life, she'd just get sicker and sicker.

In a moment of brilliance, we decided to take her to our usual vet in Golden (Golden Animal Hospital) for a second opinion. Turns out all of her teeth were in great shape except for one that was cracked. 30 minutes and $80 later our cat was good to go. She was back to her usual self by the time we got home, and has been eating and drinking normally.

We are SO grateful that we took her back to our regular vet. I am sick to think about what would have happened otherwise, and all because Redstone Animal Hospital must have seen dollar signs go up when we walked in the door concerned about our pet.

So again, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, make sure you take your beloved furry friends somewhere you can trust, and if something doesn't feel right....a second opinion never hurts!
