Editorial Review for New York Hotel Pennsylvania – by Gayot.com

The Scene
Glen Miller immortalized this hotel in the song "Pennsylvania Six-Five Thousand," back when it was the Statler. The building was designed by renowned architect Stanford White in 1904 and has a long, rich history. It's a bit of a shame that it now caters to a mostly business clientele who take advantage of its proximity (five blocks) from the Jacob Javits Center. It's also directly opposite Madison Square Garden.

The Details
Some of the 1,700 rooms have streamlined and modern looks, others have French rococo effects. But all are spirited and brightly lit, with a uniform lack of clutter. Downstairs, ballrooms and boardrooms abound. In addition, the property offers the Penn 5000 Club, with private check-in, upgraded amenities and easy access to business services. Guests may use (at discounted rates) the fitness center next door, which has an Olympic-size pool. Other facilities include a transportation desk and secretarial services.

You truly cannot beat $150/night for this hotel. It is not the Four Seasons or the W but it will do. I stay here every time I visit NYC which is about 3-4 times a year. It is in the center of it all. With Penn Station and Madison Square Garden across the street to watch those basketball games. One time I stayed here and we had to share a twin bed. But when I went back I had a larger room, queen bed and a mini-fridge. It's just a toss up on what room you get. I will be staying there again in 2weeks.

Pros: Budget, Location

Cons: Elevators

My stay here was horrible. Even though I was paying $150/night it felt like I was in a closet with a matress in it. The rooms feel like they have 50 square feet in them! After making my reservation, I read reviews and wanted to change hotels but they insisted that my stay would be perfect-WRONG! The lines are long and you cant reach housekeeping, the front desk, or anywhere else from the room telephone. I was about to die! The only good thing was that there was a buisness center down the hall from me in which I got to watch tv and make myself a good cup of coffee in. NOT RECOMMENDED!

Pros: good location, good buisness center, moderate prices

Cons: horrible service, small rooms, not worth it!
