Editorial Review for Patois – by Erin Behan

The Scene
Honeycomb-colored walls, random wall art, a peek into the kitchen from paper-topped tables--all combine for a casual, thrown-together ambience. The devoted late-night crowd of the neighborhood's bohemia--don't be surprised to hear French drift from table to table--lingers at tables over steaming plates and brimming glasses of wine. On winter nights, a fireplace gently warms a side dining room.

The Food
Classic French cuisine like smoked duck on a bed of frisse or mussels in a simple white wine broth immediately set a poetic mood. Specials--get the perfectly crisped duck confit when offered--should be taken advantage of. Seafood shines at every turn: The generously sized crabcakes arrive crunchy on the outside and meaty on the inside, while tender scallops melt in the mouth. But the rib-eye steak frites with a rich au poivre are especially hard to pass up. Desserts keep up the pace, with an Earl Grey-flavored pot-au-creme taking the cake.

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

The best seats are in the 12-table covered outdoor garden, set on a wood platform.

What to Drink

The house wine list is inexpensive and well-chosen, but request the reserve list if you're looking for something special.

Brunch

Choose from a $20 three-course prix fixe menu on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday--it's one of the neighborhood's best dinner deals. Brunch is $12 on Sundays.

The French Toast was just wonderful. I've never had anything like it. Steak and Eggs were cooked just right. Coffee was excellent. They don''t have half and half but the waitress brought us cream and we made our own with milk and cream. Service was prompt, friendly and courteous. This was our first visit to the restaurant and we'll definitely be returning. We arrived early for brunch, about 10:50 a.m. before the restaurant opened and by 11:30 they were completely full with even more people waiting outside. That's got to tell you something about the restaurant. All in all a very nice experience. John and Janet.

Pros: Great Food, good service

Cons: Looks to get crowded for brunch so arrive early

Good brunch deal, with unlimited mimosas and coffee--but don't order tea. When I asked for it, the waiter didn't even reply, just went about his business. When I asked him again, he sourly replied that he was getting it. He also failed to mention that while coffee and alcohol was unlimited, a tea bag and some hot water was three dollars. Ridiculous. The waiter was surly and took about ten minutes to ask for our order and longer to give us our check. No one asked how our food was or if we needed anything else. The brunch itself was tasty, fluffy eggs and fresh ingredients, though the home fries could have been crunchier and better seasoned. The unlimited bread basket was delicious. But the lack of quality service may prevent me from going again.
