Hey captain_bill, you're getting warmer with your Ladybird park suggestion, since it has MOST of what you need. But I'm guessing the only 5 star campground for you would be your front yard, after all there's no full size refrigerator or craftmatic adjustable bed in the rv right?

Pros: No people sitting in lawnchairs watching cable tv in front of their Rvs

Cons: not dog friendly

I wouldn't rate ER in the top 10 for camping. If I'm going to camp in central TX, you will find me at the Guadalupe River for daytime activities. What they dont tell you about ER is that it is great for spelunking the fissures throughout the rock. It is dangerous, that's why they dont tell you about it. Climb to to top and look for the portals on the back side. Once inside there are arrows to lead you out. there are 5 or more portals that connect. You need 2 flashlights per person, (one for backup) and good shoes for slippery surfaces. Take it slow, light a candle, and tell stories. Enjoy!

I've been to Enchanted Rock many times and it is definitely one of my favorite campsites in the country. I've camped all over the country and you just don't find friendlier people anywhere else in the country. I love this place for all the reasons that others dislike it!

Pros: no email, no rv hookups, no cable TV

I've only taken day trips to ER to hike. I looked at the camping area and it's great if you don't privacy. I'd go any day of the week to Pedernales Falls and have a spot in the trees before staying at ER. We were warned about the danger from hunters in the cooler months, and lets face it the only time camping is good in TX is in the cooler months. I don't think I'd put ER in my top 10 list if it were a TX only list. I've camped and hiked in quite a few places, and live in the Houston area. So far (knock on wood) I've only seen one snake while I've been out.

I have been there several time, its Texas Hill Country. There will be Texas sites, like rattlesnakes, cedar trees etc. You have to look at the beauty and history of the rock. I have taken my kids there and we have walked right up on the deer, who seem pretty interested in us too! Its a wonderful family place to explore, easy hikes etc. I would recommended it whol

I was surprised to see that there were no elevators or escalators to the top of the rock. Also, there was not a Starbucks anywhere to be found. When I go camping, I do not want to deal with being out in nature. Of course, I'm poking fun at those who want all the "hook ups" while they camp. Enchanted Rock is a great get away with appropriate facilities. Beware, though, you may want to consider staying somewhere else if you're used to having a mint placed on your pillow.

Pros: Remoteness, Stars at night are, Big and Bright

Cons: No Capuccino Machine, No manicure salon, No AC at campsites

As a resident of the fine state of Washington, I'm amused that any campsite in Texas would be in the top 10 nationwide. Fire ants? Yea, they rock. We actually have trees up here, and even the occasional lake, but the less people know about our great campsites, the better. Rattlesnake wrangling is best left to the Wild Boyz.

If you love the Texas hill country Enchanted Rock is one of the crown jewels. It's a rustic place that has it's unique character. There's a easy 4 mile loop trail to see all sides of Enchanted Rock and hiking on Enchanted Rock allows you to make your own trail as you go to the top. And if you love BBQ Cooper's in Llano is a great place to stop on the way. ER is the second highest type rock formation next to Stone Mountain in GA. After visiting Stone Mountain I'm glad to see Texas got this one right by keeping it natural. Park is crowded in cooler months get there early because park will turn away people if it gets too crowded.

Just got back from there, went car camping, nice spot. Obviously, someone has put a lot of thought into these campsites, with clean restrooms with showers nearby. Was interested in the negative comments. If you are not interested in nature, why bother going at all? Very relaxing, clean, relatively undisturbed by modern times, except for safety issues. We saw lots of animals, raccoons, ringtails, deer, various reptiles, mostly lizards and interesting birds. Fireants right in the campsite are a problem, but they respond quickly to antbait. Don't use anything that would be hazardous to the environment however, please. One of the kids found an arrowhead, which we turned in. Please comply with the rules about taking things out.

I don't understand the reviewer that complained that the park did not offer e-mail or cable services. That is not what this park is intended for. This is a beautiful park located in the scenic Texas hill country. If you want a wonderful, low level hiking experience or a nice, quite campsite, this is the park for you. Actually, there are some trails that offer pretty strenuous rock climbing, as well. If you want to watch tv and surf the net, you can easily do that at home. This is not an RV park, it is a natural habitat intended for nature lovers. This park does have a set limit of the number of people allowed to enter at a time, though. So, it is best to get to the park at 11am at the latest in order to help assure that you will be able to enter.
