Not impressed

by bluemesa

I have visited the Palm in other parts of the country. I was SO disappointed last week when I took a friend there. Ordered filet and it was overcooked. Of course, the waiter could not be found so I could return the meal. Finally found someone. Next steak was cooked properly but put on a cold plate with cold vegetables. I had ordered a glass of wine and it arrive 10 minutes after the second steak. These are basics. They were not packed - just an average crowd. No reason to go back. I want to dine and enjoy guests, not look for the staff.

  • Pros: great reputation - impresses people

Upscale steakhouse rewards high-profile patrons by immortalizing their likenesses in colorful caricatures.

by Contributor

In Short
With its Italian-tinged menu and playful artwork on the walls, this national chain (which got its start in 1926) maintains a congenial atmosphere even as corporate patrons use company credit cards to pay for 36-ounce New York strips or jumbo lobsters. Sitting in dark wood chairs placed at tables topped in white linen, suit-jacketed gents and ladies sup on prime steaks, chops and hearty portions of classic Old World dishes like spaghettini marinara and veal piccata.

Worst Food & Service

by Bessie4FR

We eat dinner out once a week and we never had a problem in the past with the Palm - in fact, I always told everyone we loved it, but they thought I was crazy. (we are just average joes who love to eat good food). We've dined at the Palm perhaps 5 times in the last 10 or 15 years and loved it - never a bad meal or service. Always satisfied. I never understood why people gave bad reviews, but now I totally understand. What happened to the Palm? I think it's a better "lunch" restaurant. Anyway, I received a coupon in the mail and lobster sounded delicious (I'm a big seafood lover from Maryland). Wrong! The lobster was overcooked, stinky, and there is no way it was a 5 lb. lobster split between us. (I've had a 4 lb. lobster there before and had to take some home). My salad was old and the greens were yellow - our side dishes were cold. Great wine menu - - I'd only get drinks at the bar (friendly bar tenders), and go elsewhere to eat good food. After dropping over $200 for two we were totally disappointed. We had good attentive service the first half hour, when the restaurant was empty. However, once the dinner crowd filled the restaurant, we were ignored by everyone. Only a place to be seen & show off jewelry. Plenty of other great restaurants in Denver to enjoy quality food!

  • Pros: Wine Menu, Bartenders
  • Cons: Seafood and Steak poorly prepared

High end steakhouse doesn't know how to cook a steak correctly

by shasong

My husband and I went to The Palm last night for our annivesary. We usually go to capital grille and del frisco. Since we were staying downtown and cap grille was booked we decided to try the palm. First off the decor was unappealing to me (but I know that is subjective) I like atmosphere this place is boring with caricatures as their wallpaper. Our server was fine and we ordered the steak tartare app which was fine, but nothing special (L'atelier has the best steak tartare). We both ordered the bone-in ribeye (our fav) which is cheaper here than del friscos. My husband orders his steaks well done and I get mine med. When our steaks came out his was charred on the outside and completely cooked all the way through. Mine was barely pink in the middle it was more well done then even med. well. We do not send food back because I have heard too many horror stories about the nasty things they do to food when you send it back. So we ate our steaks (good quality bone in ribeye is very tender even when cooked through). But we did notify them of the situation. The first manager that came over was very nice and asked if he could do anything. We didn't because we ate most of our meal. So he offered us a free dessert which i thought was nice, but we really didn't want anything. Then a second manager a woman came over and told us we could have a free dessert, UH we don't want it. My husband felt that the woman thought that we complained about our food to get a free dinner or something. Uh yes that ticked me off. We look young, we are not. We spend way more money at cap grille and del frisco's. So no we will not be going back to The Palm. Learn to cook a steak.

  • Pros: quality of meat,
  • Cons: they don't know how to cook it right. Their woman manager.

Best steak in denver

by cuxl

Always a great steak. The steaks are always perfect, not hitt or miss like Ruth?s Chris. The Lobsters are among the largest I have ever seen and the sides and salads are great. Also a great atmosphere in the bar area and in the dinning room. This is the best steak in Denver hands down. Also a great wine list.

  • Pros: Great atmosphere, steaks and location
  • Cons: none

Great people watching, you may need to be asertive with your water but it's worth it.

Go is you want to have the senior waiter humiliate you. Mean waiter, good food.

Great for entertaining clients. At one time it was a big deal to dine at the Palm, now it?s just another great restaurant in a giant maze of top-notch Denver restaurants in 80202.

Ladies if you need a place to strut in those Jimmy Choos, the Palm is perfect. One piece of advice, if something you order is off, just tell your waiter. Don?t sit and sulk. And if your waiter gives you any flack, calmly ask for the manager. There is one senior waiter who is the Adolph Hitler of waiters. He?ll try to tell you this is the Palm and basically shut up and eat it. But I?ve got news for you baby. This is a different world. We have the wallets and the power to say take this overly cooked lobster back, remove it from my bill and get me something else! And it happened just like that.

Salads are super, bread is excellent and normally the specials are to die for. You can ask them to not brush the butter over your steak or fish. It?s just not necessary if the dish is prepared right and fresh.

This is one of the great places for people watching!

  • Pros: Location, ambience is fun, people watching, close to DCPA
  • Cons: Senior waiter is really mean. Food is not consistant, but when it's good, it's great!!!

Consistantly irritable waiters, expensive common food.

by revenge

Thank you sir, may I have another. WACK! Im tired of the Palms testy waiters. And why does management tolerate easily annoyed waiters anyway?

A simple request of removing the lobster from the shell before bringing it to the table ticked our waiter off. He actually rolled his eyes repeatedly and made a noise by striking his tongue on the roof of his mouth. I asked if it was a problem and he told me usually it is a problem because customers tend to send it back. HUH? Next, my clients order the lobster with the same request of de-shelling it in the kitchen. Again the waiter displayed attitude. Same old Palm service, should be no surprise to me.

Everyone has bad days, but this is typical Palm behavior. Being nasty to our guests is the last straw. Its difficult to confront a nasty waiter with clients present because its likely to cause tension and destroy what chance you had of a fun evening.

I doubt if our absence will make a dent in their unexplainable packed house. Nevertheless, I hope visitors to Denver will read this and avoid an expensive unpleasant experience.

Typically our tab is $300-$500 for four people. Crazy me expecting great service.

  • Pros: Wine list, location, jalopino bread.
  • Cons: Temperamental waiters, weak management, common food

Very disappointed...better food at Outback

by bob220976

I was so excited getting an opportunity to go to The Palm restaurant. What a complete letdown. The ambience was nice, the service kinda slow, but most importantly and the reason for coming was the food, and it was not very good.

We went at lunch. I ordered the strip steak and a side of sauteed mushrooms. The steak was really not very good. It had alot of fat on one side but half the steak was virtually unedible because it had so much gristle. I was expecting a good steak, since that is what the Palm is known for. I honestly have had much better steaks at Outback Steakhouse, for alot less. My side of mushrooms turned out to be an entire platter of mushrooms. I don't need an entire platter of mushrooms.

  • Pros: nice decor
  • Cons: marginal food, overpriced, slow service

AWFUL!

by francina3

The waitress we had was awful. To me a steakhouse is a restaurant that knows how to properly cook a steak, I ordered the New York Strip medium rare, the first steak i received was Well Done. I sent it back, 40 minutes later they bring me a steak that i kid you not was still bleeding and transparent in the center the way raw meat is before you cook it. The waitress was neither accomodating or apologetic They did nothing to compensate for my ruined meal. In short I wouldn't waste your money on this place, I personally have no problem spending a little more money than usual on a nice meal with friends at a nice restaurant but the key word here is nice meal, for the price we paid for our meals it was a huge dissapointment to have such horrible food and service.

  • Pros: Complementary Valet, Nice Setting
  • Cons: Horrible Waitstaff, Horrible Food, Expensive

TERRIBLE. DISASTER DINNER.

by kornblith

After Hotel Teatro's concierge recommended The Palm, I make reservations for a party of 9 a month and a half prior to Thanksgiving. The Palm advertised a Thanksgiving turkey dinner for $45 per person. When we arrived on time, the restaurant was in total chaos with seemingly no one in charge. There were so many people waiting to be seated, you could not stand in the restaurant. We were taken a half an hour late to our table and then told there were no more turkey dinners available. We should have left but we ordered dinner which came an hour and a half later. The steaks were cold and bad. In fact, all the food was just plain bad. No one came and told us why our food was taking so long. The service matched the dinner. TERRIBLE. DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS RESTAURANT. IT'S A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.

  • Cons: service , food, customer care
