A million delicious choices

by caphillgirl at Citysearch

I really enjoy the Market. If you cannot decide what you want to eat, or you are with a group that can't come to an agreement, this is the perfect place. There are sandwiches, hot food selections, a salad bar, many pasta salads, cakes, ice cream, and pastries. The Market also has a large selection of beverages from a coffee bar to wine to soda and juice. I think the sandwiches may be a bit overpriced, but the rest of the food here is very fairly priced and the portions are huge. I work downtown and regularly go here for both lunch and dinner, the Market is open late. I have recommended the Market to many co workers who wanted to go to lunch together but could not agree or did not know what the others would like to eat, and they always come back happy. Also a great place for kids!

  • Cons: uncomfortable seating and average staff

Overpriced, over-rated mediocrity

by AnotherBostonTransplant at Citysearch

I am very surprised to read all of the rave reviews of The Market on this site. I work right around the corner and have stopped in many times for coffee, other beverages, or sandwiches. Every time I have gone here I have been beyond disappointed with the quality of the food, the service provided and the value for the price. Although the store itself is very charming and has great outdoor seating--good for people-watching and enjoying the sunny Denver weather--the prices here reflect more on their probable high rent rather than the quality of their food. A basic turkey sandwich with lettuce, a slice of cheese, mediocre bread and yellow French's-type mustard ran me about $7-8. The bread tasted like a supermarket roll, the lettuce was plain old iceburg (not even some Romaine?) and it did not even come with anything other than a wilted pickle--not even a deli pickle. I know that CO is not a mecca for deli's and as an East-coaster I should not have the same expectations as I would of ones in NY, Boston or Philly,--but really, how can they charge what they charge for this mediocre food? It honestly is overpriced Subway. I paid over $3.50 for an iced coffee this afternoon, and I even brought my own travel mug. The Tattered Cover does not even charge this much and they tend to be a little pricy as well. When I asked if the price of the coffee was inflated for the DNC I was told that their cold-brew 'Toddy' process was more expensive. I own a Toddy coffee maker-it is essentially a plastic bowl with a hole on the bottom. You steep the coffee in cold water and then let it filter through. It is absolutely not more expensive than brewing regular drip coffee. Service at the coffee bar is better than at the deli or the bakery counters--prepare to wait in a long, slow and inefficient lines for overpriced sandwiches and baked goods. I wish I could say something positive, and I do occasionally return in hopes of a better experience but today's visit will likely be my last.

  • Pros: Pretty building, nice ambiance, great outdoor seating
  • Cons: Pretty much everything else. Price, quality, slow service, very poor value for money

The Experience

by kenzie333 at Citysearch

I started going to the Market with my mom when I was a little girl for our ?coffee dates? and have always loved it. Over the last 15 years Larimer Square has gone through numerous vendors but the Market has remained in tact. They have a wonderful coffee bar and deli, and a great selection of sweets to enjoy with your coffee or after your meal. It?s a great place to meet friends, people watch (especially outside in the summer), read a book, or bring your laptop to catch-up on work. If you like variety, this is the place for you. This is one of my favorite spots in Denver and I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a fun experience.

It's a Must Visit

by trainerleslie at Citysearch

I live in Kansas City and whenever I visit Denver I have to go to The Market. It truly is a market, not a sit down restaurant, but the food is high quality and there's a ton of variety from breakfast to dinner. If you're traveling and want something casual, this is it. I'm always excited to see what they've made for the day as it's always different. I don't eat meat--I do eat chicken, turkey and fish--and there are many options. I'm also a trainer and personal cook, so health conscious options are important to me and while not everything is healthy, there are healthy options as well.

There's not a lot of seating, at busy times it can be a little bit of a squeeze to get around the counters. Pricing is varied $5-9 depending on portion sizes and your selections. Some items priced by the pound. Such a great place, wish we had one in KC!

  • Pros: variety of foods, pricing, high quality food, service
  • Cons: small tables and can be crowded at busy times

I love the atmosphere of this Larimer hot spot. I always meet my out of town friends here when they're stying downtown. Great coffe and comfortable atmsphere. Has a mountainy, small town feel.

  • Pros: The coffee.
  • Cons: It can be hard to find a seat sometimes.

Downtowns Best

by buffalochef at Citysearch

This is Food Snobs coffee house, desert stop, and, jeeez, I hate to cook tonight stop for something to go better than just fast food. This is a real downtown gem. Pastries with coffee are outstanding. For a nice deli meal with a wine or beer, again, the spot, the people and the selection make this place tough to beat.

  • Pros: The Charm
  • Cons: The parking

by msmcstud at Citysearch

The spring fling cake from the Market is hands down the best cake in the world. We have family who come down from Wyoming to get it. mmmmmmm

Enjoy excellent morning brew and high-quality food in a casual European atmosphere.

by Contributor at Citysearch

In Short
Everyone from businesspeople and pierced students to families and in-line skaters frequent this sidewalk cafe. This dessert heaven features cookies, cakes, tortes, pastries and muffins prepared on-site. Sandwiches are made to order with high-quality meats and cheeses. More than 60 salads, including mango-strawberry, are available. Allegro coffees and a wide selection of teas are prepared in fine European coffeehouse tradition: Rich and satisfying brews are served in ceramic cups and thick glasses.

nice shop for lunch faire

by whitheringleaf at Citysearch

Rustic shop full of locals on a nice shopping district street downtown. Great deli selection many friends and plenty of space to sit.

Coffee is not too good -- they say its roasted here in Denver -- If it is it must be roasted and then stored for some time before its brewed, it was flat and stale tasting. Their pastry is pretty good (i think they bake their own) I heard that some famous writer hung out their and wrote a best seller. who knows?

  • Pros: good food, lots of seating
  • Cons: not too good coffee

A GREAT PLACE

by cwelch1171 at Citysearch

The Market is a GREAT place to go chill and hang out for a few hours. I would head over there a number of times a week after class and have some coffee and/or meet with friends. I live out in Washington DC now and there are some pretty cool places here, but I truly do miss The Market.
