Awesome Hotel

Wonderful hotel. Great spa and restaurant. The design, colors and fabrics in the room are awesome. The place has real personality.

Great, but not perfect as expected

I took my wife to Denver for a “babymoon” and a chance to relax for a few days. I decided to stay at the Hotel Monaco Denver after a perfect experience with the Hotel Monaco Chicago last year. I debated staying at the JW Marriott in Cherry Creek, but ultimately was persuaded by a rate which included a continental breakfast (more on that later) and the special attention we had received at Monaco before. In short, at the Hotel Monaco in Chicago, we were overwhelmed by the service and attention to detail, which surpassed what we were used to—and that experience persuaded me to stay at the Monaco in Denver.

The hotel has a good location and is located one block off of the 16th street Mall. We easily walked all over downtown, and the free RTD Mall shuttle is a great convenience.

My wife had a prenatal massage at the Renaissance Spa in the hotel. She was happy with the massage ($90 for 60 minutes) and had a great experience. She said the spa was nice. I found out later that the spa has a “happy hour”—from Monday through Wednesday, spa services are 20% off from 9-11 and 1-4. Being a thrifty person, that would have been good to know.

Lastly, when we received our bill, we were charged for valet parking which we did not use. Lori, the manager, did fix the bill. Another disappointment was that the business center was not free to use (the first 15 minutes are) and it is $.49 to print each black and white page. Lesser quality hotels I have stayed in (Courtyard, Fairfield Inn) have free business centers with free printing. This seemed rather cheap to me, especially when the Hotel Monaco is not a cheap place to stay.

All in all the stay reminded me of a stay at a Marriott--a nice hotel, adequate service, but nothing special. It wasn't until the last day of our stay that a doorman actually opened the front door for us. I never saw a concierge at the concierge desk, and there was a noticeable lack of personnel in the reception area. To compare, in Chicago, you could not get near the front door before someone opened it for you and there was always at least 2 people at the front desk and a concierge. Another disappointment was we rented a car to take a day trip, and I pulled in front of the hotel to pick up my wife--the valet asked me to move the car, even after I explained I was a hotel guest there to pick up my pregnant wife. Also, we never received our goldfish, which while crushing to our stay, was strange. In Chicago, they turned down our beds at night and left mints, but that never happened here.

To sum, the hotel is perfectly nice, and in any other circumstance, I would consider this a great stay, but my prior experience with the Hotel Monaco Chicago had me expecting extraordinary quality in the hotel, a higher level of service, and a more friendly, welcoming environment. For the price ($164), I expect more attention from the staff and a very high level of hotel quality. There seemed to be a shortage of staff, and no one (except the server at the wine hour) was overly friendly. You might ask “why didn’t you complain?” First, we are not ones to complain unless something is seriously wrong. Second, no one ever called us or stopped us to ask how our stay was. If they had, I would have told them about my disappointments. (Once again, at the Hotel Monaco Chicago, someone called the first night to make sure our room was satisfactory and we were happy). For a hotel that touts itself as a Top 500 World Hotel, the stay was nothing special. I want to be clear, this is a nice hotel, and if you are used to staying at large chain hotels (Marriott, Omni, Westin, etc) you won’t be disappointed and won’t notice any difference in quality. However, if you have stayed in a Kimpton Hotel before, you have certain expectations of quality and service, and at the Hotel Monaco Denver for this stay, those expectations were not met.

Cute Decor but bed dipped in the middle, hated the pillows..

Ok so I've heard alot of positive things about this hotel so I booked it. The room is adorable and the l'occitane amenties are nice, but the bed sucked it dipped in the middle. THE PILLOWS- the sham pillows were like rocks and the down pillows felt like they had 5 feathers in them. The deluxe king room is so small (375 sq ft)! But in all fairness they did have that on their website. It's seriously hard to have 2 people change clothes in there. But the front desk people were very nice, when we asked for toothpaste they had it to our room in like 2 min, and it's a good location.

Great boutique experience with a few fixable glitches

We stayed here for our 2 year anniversary. The booking of the room went well, and upon arrival we were upgraded! I decided to do the ROMANCE package that included a movie, breakfast vouchers for Panzanos, as well as champagne/chocolate covered strawberries. I had requested a goldfish to be in our room upon arrival, but we were missing our little friend when we first came to the room. I called the front desk and they quickly brought one up. My fiance needed his suit pressed, and I also called to the front desk and they made it happen within a few hours! Totally awesome! However, after we had gone out to dinner, we came back to enjoy a soak in the jacuzzi tub with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. We opened up the box from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory to see MOLDY chocolate covered strawberries. Not just crusty, but covered halfway with mold. GROSS! Talk about a mood killer! We called down to the front desk to request a replacement dessert, and NOTHING was sent up to our room. We received an apology the next day from the concierge, as they order the goods directly from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, it really wasn't their fault...unless they had kept them in the fridge too long?? I don't know. Anyway, when we checked out, there was a small non-moldy chocolate gift for us from the local owner of the local Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory store and a bouquet of flowers; a gesture I appreciated. Too bad the hotel didn't send us anything while we were chillin in the jacuzzi with no goodies! As far as the hotel is concerned, everything was clean and beautiful. The bed was really comfortable, and the decor is extremely unique. The wine gathering was fun, and the complimentary chair massages were AWESOME! Tip: if you don't like or are allergic to dogs, do not stay here. People are walking around with their dogs on a leash, and there were a few times when some guests' pets would start barking and snarling at each other in the lobby.

favorite mile high hotel

I used to live in Denver and whenever I go back I stay at the Hotel Monaco. I love the quirky decor and you can't beat the location!

Sophisticated Style and service with out the stuffiness

When checking in for a one night get away I recieved much more than my room key. The Front Desk staff wanted to know where I was coming in from and was ready for my dog as well. I was told that it was a "must " to sit and relax with a glass of wine at their nightly wine reception in the lobby.. dogs welcome as well.

The service was outstanding all thoughout the stay including our gold fish in our room. When ready to go to dinner the front desk asked if I needed someone to walk our dog and play with her. Morning room service was prompt and I was welcomed by someone who told me about the weather outside and what to do around the hotel for breakfast and the bike path.

Job well done from the check in smiles to the check out "when are you coming back to see us". Felt like home

• Pros: Location, Style Service and fun staff. A great place to stay for work or pleasure
• Cons: That there is only one Kimpton Hotel in the city

Pet Friendly is a Plus

I have always been impressed with the Hotel Monaco chain. Room service, the bell man, and the valets were very prompt and friendly. The room was clean and had great decor. I enjoyed the complimentary goldfish. It is great to have a pet friendly hotel. Definately Recommended.

The Scene
This colorful, elegant and completely renovated boutique hotel was once the 1917 Railway Exchange building. Its location--within walking distance of Lower Downtown's numerous restaurants, jazz clubs and Coors Field--attracts an upscale business crowd during the week and an art crowd on weekends.

The Details
The comfortable chairs and sofas in the two-story lobby are covered in a manic melange of stripes, dots and bright primary colors. This is the setting of complimentary coffee every morning and wine every evening. More restful colors prevail in the 189 guest rooms and suites. Music buffs will enjoy the musical suites--the Grace Slick Suite has some of Slick's original Jefferson Starship artwork; the John Lennon suite features framed handwritten lyrics of Beatles' songs. Guest services include 24-hour room service, a Renaissance Aveda Spa and Salon and an on-site fitness center. Dogs are welcomed with treats by Lily, the resident Jack Russell Terrier.

Animal Farm or Hotel

The rooms were bright and clean, nice amenities. However, dog hair in the room, if you have alergies stay away from this place. Too many dogs. If you like to hear a barking dog, by all means stay here. Wish hotels would warn the guests that a dog may have been in the room (and on the bed and chairs, etc) before you check in.

Poor service

We held our wedding there and spent close to 20k in a weekend, but they lost my in-laws reservations and put them in a much smaller room then the suite they booked and charged them 300.00 a night for a walk in rate. The manager was unwilling to help out other then to knock a 100.00 off the price.

Wildly decorated rooms, but classy.

You can't get better service at the Westin! The Monoco is a smaller hotel with large rooms. Great servce, expecially the desk clerks (Pros). Any fool knows you have to develope a relationship with the desk persons. They are key to the hotel experience.

We often put up out of town guests at the Monoco. All I need to do is call ahead and let them know what we need in which room and bling! They make it happen and at a reasonable rate. You may even see some shy local celebrities!
