The Place
Nearly 20 years ago, Alfalfa's (now Wild Oats) was one of the first of the gourmet/organic grocery stores. The chain has grown from the funky original store in Boulder to a number of locations in Denver, as well as in Fort Collins. Alfalfa's offers exotic fruits and vegetables, hormone-free meats, and bins of beans and grains in a high-design space.

The Food
You can get lunch, dinner, or a snack at any of the locations. They've taken the plebeian salad bar to near-gourmet heights, offering delicate field greens, tofu, feta cheese, beans, nuts, and vegetables, as well as three soups of the day. Try one of the three pizza slices of the day. The macaroni and cheese is my choice for a cold day. You can get barbecued tofu (wouldn't you know) and lasagna. There are daily specials and a cold case with salads, like their standout spinach salad. Look for couscous, grilled vegetables, or a vegetarian burrito.—Restaurant Ranger
