JR's serves water - it's official
by dweber5
I've been hearing these rumors for awhile and found out for myself last night. We went there for New Years to bring in the new one there. Six vodka drinks later, nuthin. Not even a buzz, and I don't really drink. Normally if I go out and get a big draught beer it's gets me a bit buzzy. I had vodka sours and watched them put the vodka in the drink... a lot of vodka from watching them pour. Hmmmm, tasted like sweet & sour only. My friends from out of town had gin & tonics. Sure as hell didn't taste like gin. I wasn't even the first one that noticed. My friends that had never been there before asked if they were watering down the drinks. My other friend had a vodka martini, which he said tasted only like olive juice. After a couple rounds and wasted money, we said screw it and left. As we were leaving we ran into someone we know that said one of their friends mentioned that their drinks seemed to be water all night. So we went downtown to another bar and two of my friends had a gin and tonic there and knew we were getting screwed at JR's. This seems just recent too. I used to go there and get trashed on less than what we had drank there last night. Not sure what their deal is.
I'm sorry guys & gals, you can flame me if you want but when you've spent a few $100 on drinks and aren't even buzzed yet you should maybe think about what you're drinking.
- Pros: It's a nice little bar with a good environment
- Cons: serves water instead of drinks, not really a good place to meet people (too many cliques)
Giant G@y Bar Too Big For It's Own Good
by Sejanus
Really, not a terrible bar, but lacks the feeling and intimacy that make g@y bars pleasant diversions. The bar is usually packed to the gills, is far too crowded to move, and far too loud to talk. The clientele is diverse, not just g@ys, though unfortunately members of both persuasions are often insufferable party-queens. The drinks are good for the price, though the overwhelmed servers will take a while to get to you. Dope and love are abundant, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your tastes.
Name a night that is boring here
by elway35
This is a great local gay bar, very relaxed and all types of people go there. I usually take my straight coworkers as well! Awesome drink prices and their drinks are incredibly strong. Thursday night is the big night (50 cent beers, and 1/2 price drinks) but is does get very crowded. Check our karaoke nights also.
- Pros: Cute servers that make some amazing shots, very inexpensive, good variety
- Cons: parking sometimes an issue
Pretentious and Borish
by trancen
Yeah this place is LOUD. So loud that it's impossible to have a conversation. Hence the chances of meeting anyone here are pretty nil. Not to mention that the crowds are very cliquish. The drinks are cheap but there's usually a long line.
And don't expect to see any skin here. The new management has a "shirts required" policy. Maybe it's so we don't offend all the straight people. My partner and I (we have pretty good bodies) were required to wear our shirts even outside on the patio.
I suggest finding friendlier less pretentious places.
- Pros: Good location, patio & balcony
- Cons: Really LOUD, very cliquish, the staff is busy and often rude.
One of the best gay bars in Denver
by wyliepost
JR's is certainly one if the best gay bar in Denver. This bar is busy nearly every night of the week. It is a mixed crowd, but mostly gay. It seems to be where the straight people come to act gay (or even be gay). The reason this bar is so popular is because of the great drink specials (check out Thursday nights) and the outrageous Drag/Game Shows where bar patrons are participants. The Shows are very funny, but be prepared to see and hear it all!
Most of the bartenders here are very friendly, but because they are usually very busy, be prepared to wait for a drink.
People of all ages come to JR's, but the 20's to 30's crowd make up the majority. If you come to this place and sit in a corner and drink, you will not get noticed. If you are in the mood to make friends, don't be shy...say hello to someone. Most people are with others....but that does not mean they are "with" others.
Loud trendy crowd that is in a party mood.
- Pros: Great Drink Specials
- Cons: Finding a parking spot anywhere near this place on the W/E
Great Drink Specials
by mahuid
The Thursday drink specials can't be beat! It gets very crowded, so go early. It's a great place to go to with a group of friends. It won't be easy to get the bartenders' attention.
- Pros: Great drink specials, good atmosphere, good music
- Cons: Crowded, crowded, crowded
Strong drinks at a cheap price
by pokerplayer1234
I came here on Halloween night. The bar has a friendly atmosphere, open to people of all orientations not just gay. The drinks were strong and at a very reasonable price.
- Pros: Cheap drinks
- Cons: No food
Lively gay bar offers a different activity every night of the week, ranging from bingo to karaoke.

In Short
Don't be fooled by the name: This boisterous bar doesn't serve any grilled items. In fact, there's no food served at all. Instead, visitors find a lively gay scene with nightly drink specials and different activities every evening. Events range from raucous "twisted" bingo called by transvestites on Wednesdays and Broadway musical sing-alongs on Mondays to karaoke on Tuesdays and Sundays. There's also a pool table and outdoor patio space for mingling on warm nights.
No Identity
by noogs1
This bar does not know what it wants to be. One night it's gay, the next lesbian, the next drag, the next grunge..etc. No one ever seems comfortable, too many times I have been shorted at the bar to the point where I say "twenty" when I hand them a twenty.
It CAN be pretty, but the times are few and far.
- Pros: Downtown
- Cons: , Identity
Denver's Gay Cheer's
by boulderguy
A trendy but not uber-hip, JR's is a neighborhood bar that draws in a refreshingly laid-back, unpretentious crowd. This gathering spot is favorite amoung the locals, drawing a diverse clientele, it's known to attract everyone from drag queens to a mixed twentysomething crowd late at night and on weekends. Weeknights feature everything from Gong Show karaoke and Drag Queen Bingo to the very crowded quarter beer night, while the weekends offer themed shows such as Saturday's "Feygele Feud!" Where the staff drinks right along with you and is always friendly. JR's is the perfect place to grab a drink with friends, or maybe meet some new ones!
- Pros: Drink Specials, Entertainment, Friendly Staff
