Whole Foods is a Better Bet

I agree, writeon1, Marczyk has fallen from grace. I think the Marczyk brothers might actually think they won the world series. Their ego has gotten out of control. I was a frequent shopper and have gripes about their inventory and prices, but they are also incredibly misleading.

I bought a decent Malbec from their wine shop and was told it was distributed only to them. What a joke! I saw the same bottle at two nearby stores for $3 less! In fact, you can ALWAYS find the wine they sell for much less within three blocks. We had a question about cheese and on two different occasions the staffer said, "um, let me see" and never came back. What?? It's a very small store. Customer service and staff expertise like that does not support their prices.

The Marczyk bros have bought into their own hype. I'd avoid this place if at all possible. There is a Whole Foods very near by.

Another one bites the dust

Marczyk's used to really stand out. Their quality and selection rivaled even shops of this ilk in Chicago and NYC. Unfortunately, things have completely changed in the last couple of years. The stocking seems to be haphazard, with no rhyme or reason to it. In addition to the downgrading of their cheese section, they also decimated their olive selection and the produce is really almost nil. Yes, they have nice agreements with certain local and organic farmers, which is great, but the selection is completely erratic and the prices for what they do still have really can't compete with Whole Foods. Also, the daily soup selection used to be much more inventive and what happened to the smaller containers of the once-excellent gazpacho in the summertime? Literally everything has gone downhill, even the bread and pastry selection. I don't understand why. And let's not even talk about the wine shop! The girl in there does not know the first thing about wine. Did the Marczyks really think we wouldn't notice (Hint: Go to Above the Rim instead!)?? The meats are still decent, but when you are a purveyor of imported and specialty items, you really need to invest in a staff that knows their business. Unfortunately, between the dumbing down of your stock and the hiring of less-than-knowledgable staff, I have lost interest in Marczyk's. It can no longer call itself anything other than a neighborhood shop, bereft anything out of the ordinary and lacking in the basics.

Downward turn

Sadly, Marczyk is not what it once was. They no longer provide the variety of or service for their cheeses. The butchers are apathetic. And their overall customer service is bordering on rude. This shop was once my favorite.

Uptown Denver Heaven

Walking through downtown Denver up to Uptown was an interesting experience. I ended up at Marczyk, and I'm glad I did. This place is Gourmet and (sometimes) organic heaven. There was so much to choose from, I had no idea where to begin.

I walked in, turned left, and looked that the various jam, jellies, relishes, breads (olive oil flatbreads? What? Sounds delicious). Then I wander ed over to the candy section for a special treat for myself. Lots of organic and international chocolate. I picked out some Hammond's Root Beer Drops and a Mocha truffle bar (with Pig's behind imprinted on it. You have to check it out) for my dad for his birthday.

Good produce section, meat selection, and deli. I have a gigantic sweet tooth, and the dessert selection was unbelievable. There were individual cheesecakes and flans and mousses and cakes, but also big cakes for multiple people. If I had time to go back home before I went back to class, I would have bought a cheesecake for myself.

Fresh bread selection, but also packaged wheat and organic selections. Nice looking baguettes. Yum.

Marczyk Fine Foods equals Uptown Denver Heaven.

Fresh Seafood, Great cheeses

I go here specifically for the fresh seafood. The store displays it properly (not wrapped in plastic). The fish is always on ice or on a marble slab. It doesn't have that "fishy" smell. The staff is always really nice. I tried some of their cheeses for the first time and I wasn't disappointed. I don't do my regular shopping their, but use it when I want fresh fish or nice cheese.

Great Steaks!

I just bought two tenderloins and I loved them. I will be back and try some seafood next time. I really like the selection of candy for a small romantic dessert.

What Dean & Deluca is to NYC

Alright, I'll admit it: I moved to Uptown for Marczyk's. It was on the top of the list of places in the neighborhood which looked hip enough for this east coast (Miami) transplant. Thankfully, the content lives up to the fascade! The folks at Marczyk's, from the owner to the butcher, are friendly and knowledgable. Though the selection may seem limited, this is not a supermarket. Each item is carefully chosen (in fact, when the chickens at the local egg farm went on strike, there was an apology note for having to sell what another big chain boutique market considers their "top shelf" eggs).

Highlights include the cheese cave, butcher counter, and pre-made section (one of these days, though, this Miami native is going to have to show the Marczyks how to make maduros from plantains, rather than bananas). Though the produce section does generally leave something to be desired, the staff can usually make excellent suggestions to work around any ommissions in their stock.

In all, Marzyk's is an incredible, around-the-corner neighborhood market. My frequent shopper rewards there are embarassingly large, so to say I recommend the place is an understatement.

• Cons: Limited produce section.

It feels like shopping in Europe--wandering from fresh seafood to fine wines to gourmet cheeses to delectable desserts as if each spot were a miniature market. Every item in the store is chosen for quality, including organic vegetables, exotic stuffed olives, artisanal cheeses, wines and specialty desserts. Marczyk also boasts several specialty sandwiches, which can be enjoyed at one of the few tables on the sidewalk outside.
