WARNING! Their return policy is a lie. "100% Satisfaction Guarenteed" is plastered all over the store, behind the registers on a HUGE banner, on little cards by the registers, even on signs over the food products. No small print, just satisfaction guarenteed. But they wouldn't accept a returned food item I didn't like. I had the receipt for the purchase I made nine days ago, but they said no. I even asked to talk to the manager, but he said no. Despite the fact the satisfaction guarentee has no small print anyware, apparently they don't take back food products. The principle of it, even if the cost was modest, REALLY bothers me. They lie and can't be trusted, is the way I was made to feel. The manager was no help, and didn't appologize. The return policy is untrue, and I never want to give them my money again. BEWARE--they have top level prices and bottom level service! I say STAY AWAY. I know I'm going to do everything I can do to take my business elsewhere. And I hope you, dear reader, do, too!
Pros: Nice atmosphere
Cons: Return policy is a lie; rediculously high prices

All their stores are very fun to shop and ogle at all the equipment you never even knew you needed - and the new Santa Monica location is nice and new feeling and spacious. I recommend becoming a member: you get 8-10% cash back on everything you buy, plus they have the most incredible return policy. You can bring anything back at any time, even years after you bought it, for a refund or replacement. My only gripe about this store is I wish they had cooler/trendier workout clothes.

I've been a member of the REI Co-Op for over a decade now and as far as I am concerned there is no better gear shop (backpack, climb, ski, paddle, etc) around. This new Santa Monica location definitely continues that tradition. On top of that it's the largest REI that I've been in in the LA area with two stories of outdoor toys! We were there gearing up for a family camping trip and the staff there were very friendly and actually knew about the gear they sell. They asked us all about the trip and seemed genuinely interested in our adventure.
Pros: Quality and selection of gear, service, optional membership = savings
